forge fluttering
forge fluttering
I know there are 1000 posts on here about the forge recirc having fluttering problems. My question is a bit different however: I have a k&n typhoon+forge recirc. The BOV works fine, it doesn't buck or stall, feels just like stock but quicker, the only problem is that it makes a sound at around .68kpa upwards of boost that sounds like an echoing sneeze. I don't think it is compressor surge b/c like I said I don't lose power, it is just an annoying and wierd sound compared to the woosh that occurs below .68kpa. Is this a normal circumstance? I have the green spring installed with no shims and the BOV has the vaccum nipple pointing up towards the radiator piping. Stock boost too. Is this noise an inidication of fluttering? If so, is it damaging my car? Don't forget that it is not causing driveability issues. Thanks.
Hmmm I had the same problem too, with the same products. the typhoon rocks huh... it is loud. I accidentally had the BOV on wrong and it sounds like you do too. While your doing it it might not hurt to try the blue spring with 2 shims.
The green spring may work better with the valve in the factory position (top of valve pointing to the front of the car). The only combination my car would work with was the bule spring with it installed the way you have it (top of the valve pointing up). So keep it the way you have it but put the blue spring in. The green spring may just be too soft for this position. If you don't want to go straight to the blue try the yellow first. If all that does not work flip it around and start with the yellow spring.

here's the order I went in: started out with yellow and two shims with top pointing towards radiator. Then I switched to yellow w/ no shims, then to green, then to green with one shim, then to green with two shims, then I turned it to make the top (vaccum nipple) face up, and put green with no shims back in. All positions resulted in flutter at WOT, except final position is the calmest, but still annoying. So you think I should go for blue? Why would a stiffer spring make it not flutter?
I almost forgot.
Make sure your hose isn't kinked or even has a tight turn in it.
If you need to make a longer one go to pepboys and get a piece of vacuum/washer hose 7/32"ID.
BTW the factory clamps will not work with the new hose.
If you do that.

the small pronged clamps won't work? Why not? they seemed pretty strong...what do i need to use if they won't work? I don't think it is crimped, i bought a new hose and outiftted it to a longer length, only prob is that the bov kind of sticks up to the point where the line is almost jammed against the bottom of the radiator pipe. What do i do a/b that?

To be honest. I have no clue why.
But here's what I did.
Started the factory way like you did with the yellow spring =Fluttered. -Green spring with all shims =Fluttered. -Green by itself =Fluttered. Called Tom at Forge ( he was great. Talked to me for like an hour ) Said he had someone else with the same problem, and told them to flip it around with the yellow spring. He never heard from them again.
So I tried it the opposite way (nipple facing up) with the yellow spring =No Flutter. Not as loud, But NO flutter. Needless to say Tom never heard from me again either.
But after that, I did notice that the yellow spring seemed too soft and wanted to "pop off" useful boost. So I put the blue one in and it held more boost than the yellow would.
So, trust me this combination works great.
Then again I have seen posts where people say "I have the yellow spring, with no shims, in the factory way, and I have no problems."
So all I can say is try it. Aparently each EVO reacts differently.

The hose that I bought was too thick and the factory clamps would not fit around it. As for the upper radiator hose, I had the BOV line coming up the left side next to the turbo/heat shield with no clearance problems.
Im gone for the night
good luck
Make sure you give us updates on your progress.
didn't work...did you want me to put in two shims as well? One on top and one on bottom? I only put in the blue spring...it made a loud, rattlesnake tempoed woosh...like this: Whoosh-chawoosh-chawoosh-chawoosh. What now? All clamps are secure.
NO. No shims. It's already too tight if it's making that noise.
Try the yellow spring with the factory position.
If this doesn't work you may want to call someone at Forge or the place you bought the valve from.
Or sell it and buy mine. It works!

mine seems to make a fluttering noise when at half throttle and higher rmps. I have the yellow spring in and the nipple is pointed at the radiator. I am going to try the blue spring and see if that helps. I also get a fluttering noise when letting off of the gas slowly. when I let off of the gas between shifts at wide open throttle I just get one whoosh sound. hopefully it will help when I put in the blue spring.
