ok so whats the alternative to getting it prepped before powdercoating the valvecover?

just hit it with paint remover and use sandpaper to clean the minor leftovers?

Thats a good question. I wonder what TCC does to help prevent any of this? just mentioning them because its the main company i see that does evo valvecovers on this forum. But im pretty sure a blast must be done so that the powder will have a good surface to Bite onto.

This is a really good write up. One question though, why tap for bolts and go through the trouble of safety wire when you could just put some blind rivets back in? Like Huck or cherry max. I realize a huck or cherrymax gun isn't an item you can go buy at home depot, but If you take this to an aviation shop that can shoot either of these they can shoot those (what is it 16?) in 10 mins.

Same, but my powdercoater just asked for an old valve cover gasket and taped up the the whole underside of the valve cover and then taped the PCV hole, along with the spark plug tube holes.

nice thread! im about to do this, but im going to dull the tap slightly and just slightly crimp the threads of the bolts in a vice and loctite instead of safety wire. the bolts cant back out with distorted slightly cross threaded threads.

If they tape it up, it doesn't mean all the media was blocked 100%. Have you seen the different kinds of media used for sandblasting? You could probably stop 99% of it, but its really hard to keep all of it out. And if the stuff does get under your baffles, there is no way in hella you can clean it all out wihout removing the baffles. I've coated vc's before and I also did the same thing the OP did, but I didn't use safety wire, I just used loctite.

I tapped mine because I figured that I could take them out again if/when I want to change colors. Simplicity!

Plain and simple. If you glass bead/sand blast your valve cover you MUST pull the baffles out and clean everything. I just did it on mine and I rivited the baffles back in.

your lockwire is installed wrong. the idea is perfect, but the result is wrong, i see many of those installed in the loosening direction. technically it could only loosen so much anyways but at the end of the day its done wrong.

When I had my EVO I valve cover coated, I removed the stock baffle before sending it to my powder coaters so there was no risk of getting any media under it.

When I got the cover back, I ordered a replacement baffle from 'greengoblin' on DSMTuners.

Maybe if we can get enough interest, he would make some for the EVO 8/9 cover?

The quality of the piece was excellent, and fit perfectly!

Group buy??
