Or is the top part of the console (the part with the ashtray) just connected by plastic and it will just pop out? I dont' want to ruin anything by doing this.

Why do you need to take the shift boot off to install a shift knob? Can you post a pix of the knob you got?

Yeah but if you hold the knob and turn the car counter clock wise, its just tightening the knob. If you turn the car clock wise it'll loosen the knob.

Edit: try it with a soda bottle.

Wow. Do you have someone who can help you? Seriously, this is quite possibly the easiest install ever and you're struggling with it. My 8 year old son could change the shift knob... Why are you removing the center console to install a shift knob?

The 'screw' you are referring to is probably a plastic push pin where you have to depress the center of the pin and then pull it out.

I guess the instructions in my previous post from the ricer's maintenance manual were confusing, so I will quote it exactly:
  1. Open sunroof. If car is not equipped with sunroof, you must drill a 6" hole in the roof over the shifter mechanism. Use a rusty hole saw ghetto rigged to an electric drill with duct tape.
  2. Attach holding fixture, PN 1D10TR1CER, to shop ceiling.
  3. Attach other end of holding fixture to the shift knob through the sunroof or new 6" hole.
  4. Lift car and place dollies under all 4 tires. If no dollies are available, skateboards or rollerblades can be used. The self-adjusting duct tape mechanism on the holding fixture will adjust for any height difference.
  5. Rotate the car in a clockwise direction as seen from above until the shifter knob comes loose. If no clock is available for reference, see section entitled: Clocks - What are they?
  6. Remove fixture from shift knob and ceiling.
  7. If a hole was drilled in the roof, cover with the largest APC sticker available. Optionally, you may cover the hole with an unpainted fiberglass roof scoop.

I was going to see if I could cut the bolt down because the MOMO knob is like 2 inches taller than the stock shift knob, so the whole shifter is really tall now with the Momo knob on. Its like a Mack truck shifter. Turns out I'm just gonna buy a short shifter. I didn't think the Momo would be that much bigger.

I did not think the MOMO knob would be like 2 inches bigger than the factory knob, so the whole shifter is really tall now. Like a Mack truck shifter. I was going to take out the factory shifter and machine it down, but I'm just going to buy a short shifter now. Plus I cannot put on the bottom thread ring on the MOMO bc when I press the knob all the way to screw the screws in there is no room for the thread ring.

Thanks anyway smartass, thats good your 8 yr old son could do it, like I give a ****.

Oh, do you have a pix of the knob? Good luck with your install.

Hey, you're the one who posted here because they couldn't unscrew a shift knob. He's available for hire if you ever have trouble opening those pesky jars or bottles.
