Living with the HKS SSQ BOV
Living with the HKS SSQ BOV
Hello all.
I am currently not an Evo owner at the moment.
But if my new job pans out I'll have one inside of the next year. Hence my reason for browsing the forums here and soaking it all in.
I've seen a lot of threads here on BOV's and about the fluttering caused by various BOV's and how to stop it. One that seems to keep coming up a lot is the HKS SSQ BOV. I own a 95 Eclipse GS-T at the moment and have the HKS SSQ BOV installed on it.
My first tip to anyone that has or wants this BOV. This is not a street BOV. IMO it was developed specifically with racing in mind. That's why it seems to behave so poorly on the street. Basically, it was meant to be slammed shut, or ripped wide open.
To that end, if you have one, or want to get one, the way to get it to play nice is simple, and not for everyone. Drive hard. 100% of the time. Okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but seriously, just let off the throttle when you let off of it. Don't ease out (other than highway driving). If you have to slow down, don't ease out of the throttle, just take your foot off and allow the throttle plate to slam shut. This way the BOV isn't struggling to open. Remember the HKS valve is arranged backwards compared to most BOV's, it seals tighter the more boost you run, so it has to popped hard to get started.
I know this is probably not the answer a lot of you would have liked to hear to make your SSQ work at mid throttle back off, but it does work. Give it a shot.

No, not idle problems, mine idles just fine as well. It surges when you are accelerating hard and then only let partially off the throttle.
Anyway, if you don't have it, great, but if you do have it, you'll know what I'm talking about.
