Dave - i sold my evo about 3 weeks ago....i bought a 6k miles 2003 cobra convertible... it is way way faster on a roll than the evo was!
As for breakin... I started to run mine to the redline at 200 miles and took it drag racing at 500 miles and got a 13.4 at beaversprings. never an engine problem for the 23k miles that I owned the car.
