if you are using it on the rear, go to wal-mart or some department store and buy the 'feet' from electronic equipment and stick them on the back in a few places (near the corners)

I did that to mine and no marks at all. The rubber feet were pretty cheap also, like 2 bucks..

good luck

The rubber feet are little round stick-on rubber disks. They go on the bottom of your stereo equipment to isolate vibration, etc.

or you could pick up a roll of foam tape that's used to put between a pick up truck bed and a cap for the bed. It's like $5 for a roll

only problem i could see with this is that it may hold water. i had a small rag behind my plate until i got home to put those pads on. and during the rainy day it collected water and held all of the grimy water in there..

not so bad if it is just water.. but how many places 'just' have water on the ground, it would be sad to have the paint peel behind the license plate and spread.

the foam tape would work for the job. i am not saying it won't.

or use the foam from a meat package, get a new one, just ask, then cut it to size.

or get thin weatherstripping and line the back of it with it. I never even thought that plates could scratch the bumper, never realized...
