Do I need a box for my Infinity sub?

Hey guys. I have the Infinity stereo that's part of the SSL package. I pulled out the factory sub box from the trunk in order to get my coilovers on, and I realized just how small the sub box really is.

I don't really want to reinstall it in the same location, because it's located in a spot that will interfere with my new rear strut brace.

My question is, do I need the speaker in a box, or can I mount just the speaker upside down from the underside of the trunk? I was thinking about mounting it next to the rear wiper on the inside of the trunk. I don't know crap about stereo stuff, so any help is appreciated.

Here's some pics of my speaker removed from the box.

I don't know much about speakers either, but i think with the sub, the box helps with the depth of the bass. removing it will change the sound.

Yeah, I was thinking the box might help the bass resonate. I'll probably just mount it in a different location once I get the strut brace installed.

Hey could u measure for me the amount of depth the box has form the speaker hole to the back of the box and how big is the mounting hole? Earthquake makes a shallow mount sub im wondering if it would fit in there

to mount a subwoofer directly to the floor or to the back of the seat or something like that you need a subwoofer that is made for free-air setup. I used to have an Infinity Perfect VQ sub that could be run like that. Free air setups are kinda hard to get good sound out of, plus you need to seal the trunk well...

Ok, so I'm going to keep it in a box, the only question now is if I reuse the Infinity box or get a new one. The Infinity box is very shallow (about 2-3" deep), so I might just look around for a shallow box to replace it with. The Infinity box has a very strange shape to it, because it's molded to fit around the passenger wheel well in the trunk. I'm sure it won't look right if I tried to mount it somewhere else, due to the funky shape. The only way to mount the Infinity box elsewhere would be to bend the brackets or make new ones.

I'm out of town and away from my car for the next 5 days, I'll post up some pics of my solution once I get back home.

I case you're wondering, it will sound bad without a box because the sound waves from the backside of the woofer will cancel the waves from the front, resulting in sloshed around the air, but no sound. A box contains the back-wave and also creates and "acoustic suspension" to add spring rate to the mechanical woofer suspension. For this reason, it's important to have to correct box volume.
