I want to go wingless when I get my evo..........just not sure if I am getting the IX or the RS yet
if I get the IX I could just sell the wing to somebody here I suspect and use that $ to have the holes welded/filled in and the whole thing repainted

Seriously....go take a magnet off your refrigerator and go outside to your "new" evo. Now place the magnet on the trunk. It sticks, why? because magnets stick to ferrous materials like STEEL, this means they contain iron. Aluminum is non-ferrous and doesn't contain any iron, thus the maget would not stick.

As far as what body parts are aluminum. All E8's and 9's have Aluminum Hood and front Fenders. Some RS models and MR's (maybe SE too) have an aluminum roof. There are NO other OEM aluminum panels on the Evo's!

Yes, SEs have aluminum roofs. The trunks are not aluminum.

The MR, RS and SE have ALUMINUM HOOD'S, FENDER'S, and ROOF'S.

That's it.. End of story.

As for the OP, since the TRUNK IS STEEL, a good body shop will weld the holes shut, grind the welds smooth, apply a thin layer of body filler, then apply corrosion protection, primer/primer sealer, then respray the entire trunk, possibly even feather edge the paint into the quarter panels and rear bumper. At least the entire trunk lid should/will be repainted to assure a blendable match. Then a few coats of clear, then wet sand and buff. Then, your all set. Wingless FTW!!

Here are pics of my '03 EVO VIII sans wing and some close up shots of the trunk lid. I used some black plastic body panel fasteners to fill the holes. I had to cut them shorter and they are held in place by a little dab of clear silicone under the "head".

I think the Apex Silver EVOs have a very unique "industrial" look that I really like. The black "rivets" kind of fit with the "industrial" look, IMO. And, I can easily put the wing back on if needed.

Not trying to be a jerk, but that looks like crap. I don't understand why someone is happy with something half assed when they spend 35K on a car. It would look a lot better with a new trunk that costs $100.
