At the very least, buy the remote display. It may look a little better on the visor, but it really is hindering it's ability to function as well as it can. I have my escort 8500 X50 on my windshield below my rearview mirror, because that is the best place for it. That detector as well as the V1 needs to be able to have a clear line of sight for both the front and back.

What you should do is hardwire it below the rearview mirror (or anywhere on the windshield where it can see out of the front and back with no obstructions) and then mount the remote display wherever you want (by the ashtray, top of steering column, etc.), because you can set the main display on the V1 to turn off even though it's still working. This is a benefit because at night no one will be able to see you your V1 since the main display is off, but then you can use the remote display (looks the exact same) for more convenience and it won't be seen by others.

The main point to take away from all this is that it needs to be mounted on the windshield with no obstructions front or back. It does make a difference.

I have mine on the windshield right next to the rear view mirror to the left and I have the wires hidden in the pillar.

Picks up threats far behind me as well.

I thought I read somewhere in the manual that it should be as low as possible in the dash for better accuracy.

ya, after having it for about a week there, it isn't really that sturdy.
plus it's a ***** when the sun is in my eyes and i flip it down. haha
im ordering the separate display for my V-1. once i get it, im remounting mine on the windshield by my mirror, and just going to hardwire it.
ill post pix when it's all up and running super clean.

and does anyone's go off on the freeway sometimes when your at offramps?
it seems like my detector sometimes picks up on cops on the street while im on the freeway, makes me slow down each time. hahaha
