i did this a long time ago... i painted it hi temp black. It looked good, but in time, it slowly faded. Either way, it was better looking than rust brown.

and why would this be dumb ? not many people like the whole rust appearance package that the evo comes with. Why not make it more pleasing to the eye for $4 and 20 minutes of your time.

I painted mine balck too and it faded just like the poster above. I think that when water hits the hot manifold is when it turns crappy. For $5 though it looks a hell of alot better.

Peel off? It made fade but what would cause it to peel off?

Might as well do it, maybe but double the layer or coats. Fun project for the weekend anyways an at most cost you 14$

rattle canned it on the car... sanded it a little bit to get the loose stuff off. i hit it with a couple light coats and she was done in 20 min. i used 2000*, 1 can, had plenty left over. it wont flake. the rust soaks up the first coat lol

doesnt sound like the OP is interested in pulling the mani or having it coated, i think he is more interested in getting the rust to go away. Manifold coating is not jet hots specialty either. If you ask a lot of the people in this community that have tried them, their stuff started peeling before too long. Thats one of the reason most the people went to swain as it doesnt peel quite as soon if at all. Anything that doesnt get as hot as the manifold does, jet hot is definitely good for those pieces

So is it safe to say the only real option other than painting every so often is to go stainless?

no, you can get it coated by Jet hot, swain or buy the silver coated one that buschur and ppi sell.
