I don't think you need an slr camera, as long as your camera has the ability to adjust the exposure. Basically all you need is a camera with that ability, and a tripod. Take 3 or more photos with different exposures and then use a HDR plug in in photoshop or photomatix. I used a canon rebel xt.
I did not shoot these pics in raw, but the next time I will. This was a quick test for my new photomatix software.

Thanks for the comments, I Hope to take some photos in raw format later this week and see how they turn out. Also the full resolution pics are amazing, photobucket makes them look like crap : P
