Want to Paint it *FLAT* Black

There's the high-gloss, "Tarmac Black" that shipped on some Evos prior to MY2006 (you couldn't get black MY2006 Evos when I got mine) - that color looks great IMO.

What would it cost to have a high quality paint job done on Evos so that it was a *flat* black (think no gloss powder coated look)? There are obviously limits on automotive paint with respect to this kind of look; if you have a clear coat to protect the pigment, you're going to get some reflectivity.

Is it possible to just powder coat the sucker black? What would this cost? What would this weigh?

This is a pretty good example: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...=repaint+black

I dont think you could powder coat it. you have to charge the car with electricity, spray on the powder, then bake it at a high temperature.

There are a handful of flat black EVOs on here though. So I am sure you can find some info on how they had theirs painted.

A buddy of mine did his STi Flat. Bought the paint on eBay and had "Evolution IVGSR" spray it for him. Turned out really really really good. I mean, Ive seen a ton of cars doing this around the area and for some reason this STi looked the best (look/feel of paint)

Have you chosen paint yet? I'll ask him to see what kind he got. I know he just picked it up off ebay.

I have seen it on a local evo and it looks great, but seems very labor intensive to keep looking good

ok so i was wrong, its not an actual paint from basf but a process/clear gloss reduction...............................Carizzma allows a reduction in the gloss level of the clear coat, giving you the option to product any color in a flat finish. The technique and the product is essentially the same as any normal paint application; the trick lies in how BASF flattens out the clear in their proprietary mix ratio.

During the application process, however, there is one difference: On a regular paint job you wet sand and buff the finish when you are done. On a flat paint job, you skip that process, allowing the paint to simply air dry or bake.

Maintenance on Carizzma is very easy: Just hand wash, dry and you're done. The paint rarely scratches because of the flat DC92/DC98 clear and you never have to wax it!!!

THe STI Wing Is off the WRC Rally car... I like it and then I don't like it Not my car tho I just painted it for him... The Color and paint was a single stage paint job. Which mean it is a base and clear coat mixed together. He bought the paint off Ebay for like $150... I had never heard of the brand nor do I remember the brand of paint, but the color was Hot Rod Black... Its not a flat black but a satin finish... a bit of a gloss but not much.. I like the color a lot and it did turn out very nice for being a 2 day paint job.. most paint is 2 stage which is a base then clear coat. The paint was very durable and did withstand are Utah winter for eveery day use So I would do it again and use the same paint if I do another Satin black finished car... I may do My Turbo BMW that same color..

That Evo you are looking at is a flat color black and the STI is satin Finish satin finish looks better than the flat finish...

For Christ's sake, leave the flat black to hot rods and customs - cars that the color belongs on. Evos look absolutely ridiculous in flat black.
