handheld shots are good up to something like 1/50th of a second....anything slower and you're going to get some blurs. you can also bump up your ISO to keep a faster shutter speed. regardless of your settings, i do highly recomment a good set of tripod. that and a remote shutter release and you'll take some awesome low light shots.

First up, I'm having trouble getting my photo's to look decent once converted to jpeg/png for web. I've sized them to around 1280x854 or so, but darker areas seem to loose all definition or become pixel-ish instead of having smooth colour/tone transitions. I've set the max quality but it doesn't help at all. Is there any way around this apart from saving in a less losey format such as TIFF?

My second (very very basic) question is in relation to the shots above - is a tripod 100% required for low light photography? I have tried adjusting iso settings and aperture but can't get rid of super blurry photo's, even in "dusk" lighting. I have only just got my dslr (Canon 600D), so am probably doing something wrong. Any tips to help until I am able to get a tripod?

Thanks all

Remote triggers FTW. I've got a cheap wired one, and that's all you need to get rid of camera shake. Otherwise an alternative is throwing a 2 second delay on the shot, but that gets old after a while.

Yea I just got the nikon 1.8 50mm lens and a nikon tripod just haven't been able to use the tripod yet for the night shots. I need to get the wireless remote in the meantime ill just try you the 2 sec delay to get rid of the camera shake. Ill look into bumping my ISO up as well to see what happens.

Has anyone seen the new Nikon D800 its full frame and it shoots video I'm thinking about trading in my D90 for one any opinions on it.

Thanks!

First off, all of the low light shots are on a tripod, which helps immensely, and longer shutter speeds will help define the edges in the image on their own. I try to manually focus everything as well, 99% of the time you'll do better than the auto focus could ever hope to do, never mind the extra creative edge it gives you over everyone else who just points and clicks. In the end though, probably the biggest advantage I have is that while being a guy called 'Spaz', I'm actually pretty steady. If, as mentioned above, 1/50 is as good as it gets for handheld shots, I should probably take up brain surgery, with the number of clear 1/20s I've had.

I will admit that I did switch to autofocus on the shot of my buddy's dog, little guy never sits still long enough to manually focus on.

that's my ultimate goal.......either the D800 or the Canon 5D mark III. Full frame FTW but they're so expensive FTL. the D800 is selling like hotcakes at Amazon right now. Both the D800 and 5D are $3k+ body only and im not sure how much you can get the D90 trade-in. Plus how seriously are you to justify spending that much for a camera?

The D800 is going for $2999 also if you get it from NH it won't have any sales tax so thats saving you some coin there. You have to pay about $1500 for a old used full frame camera body with X amount of clicks. But with the sensor from the D4, 36mp, Full Frame, and HD video capabilities. Its well worth the additional 1500 it if you plan on keeping the body for about 4-5yrs. Being on the leading edge of technology is always expensive

Highlight pics from tonight:

And yes, I realize I reuse angles and shots a lot. But I refuse to fix what isn't broke.

I shoot a lot of the same cars every week because I know the owners, but I try to mix things up in my postings. We'll see how long I can keep that up, lol.
