How reliable is that process with rattle can? Without the whole wheel being covered with paint, is it easier to chip or for salt ect to get in there during the winter? I'm thinking of doing this to my stock wheels that are strictly winter wheels, any ideas?
looks good by the way!

I don't think it would matter if the lip was curbed, but the cool thing is you could probably use a tiny bit of bondo or something similar and really sand down the curb rash to make it look good, then paint over it. It may throw off the balance if the rash is bad enough though.

If you don't prep it correctly and just paint over brake dust and grime, it will flake off for sure. If you prep it and use a cheap paint, it could also flake. I guess the bottom line is to just make sure you don't slack or try to cut any corners, and use a good paint. my brother has painted a bunch of wheels, and I've done a few, and I haven't seen any of them peel yet.
You should have taken the wheel weight off before painting. I guess you could easily touch it up when the weight is removed, or maybe even sand down the area and give the wheel another coat when the time comes.
I used metal spray paint, then clear coated it with clear engine 1200degree paint..I like mine, but they have been through hell since last summer so feel like I want to redo them.
And for my curb rach, use a dremel..works great!

What's the name of the Spray paint? How many spray cans do you use?
I'm guessing, cleaning the wheel very good before spray painting will help from chipping or flaking off.

Doing something like this takes time.. you need to clean the rim well with a SOS or abrasive pad beforehand to get all the brake dust and tiny particles off so you don't experience flaking in the future. if you want really good results remove center cap and weights and maybe mark with chalk where the weight went for when done. if you want shine, use a spray bottle and 3000 grit sand paper between coats to get a nice mirror shine. if you want flat you can use up to a 1500 to get er smooth.
well done man but if you rush, plan on rushing 2ice a year to keep it nice!
