there really arent any loop holes.. they are 100% illegal... and what hes doing is 100% illegal too.(technically). everything about legit or converted evos prior to the ct9a chassis is illegal... i honestly dont see any difference from a vin swapped legit evo vs. a clone car... in the end, if done correctly like s.gasper is doing, the original mirage is so cut up, and real evo panels are welded in, that what difference does a vin plate matter?? the engine and drivetrain are all technically illegal, since they are jdm and dont have the proper emissions components....

honeslty, if i had the money... i would buy a legit evo 5 or 6.. buy a junk mirage, swap all the vins, and drive it around... because there really is no difference to me between doing that, and building one from a real mirage.. in the end, they are both 100% illegal.

now, in retrospect.. odds are, i would do exactly what j.gasper is doing, because in the end, its alot easier to spend a little here and there, then it is to come up with a giant chuck of change all at once! and the gratification of knowing YOU built the car! and i guess the slight sigh of relief of knowing MOST of the chassis is legit..lol

and i mean no disrespect in any way to anyone in this post.. as im drooling over his conversion and just WISH i had the time and patience to do it..

Awesome build. Some states will issue a vin to a "custom built" or "homemade vehicle" but every state is different as far as what quilfies. I'm sure with enough aftermarket parts it would qualify somewhere for a state issued vin, You would just have to reside there. I'm just not sure how federal regs would then apply.

LHD Evo 5/6 are very expensive as is, but like stated will never be legal here unless someone fronts the money for crash testing or until the car is 25 years old

id say OP has around 8-9K invested so far may be wrong I myself am about 85% done and im sitting at 11.5K
there are were loop holes, but thanks to the shady importers like rb motoring and kaizo industries, those loop holes have began closing quickly

the only thing that may be "illegal" about my car would be the engine set, other then that everything is perfectly legal. so to make the car completely legal all i have to do is swap over to the evo 8/9 smog stuff and bam done deal. the vin on the firewall being different is no biggy because i will have the car inspected by chp(cali highway patrol) and once they see the car is legit i will be issued a new vin for it.

vin swapping a car is a felony and though its not likely to get caught if you do your screwed and so is the car. doing a clone is the only legal way to do, and like i said using evo 8/9 smog equipment makes it "legal"

and no worries bro i know you mean no disrespect, i appreciate how much you have followed my build and contributed(backseats ftw lol)

this is something that i am researching right now. California has a specially constructed vehicle program which would create a new vin for the car and California also has SB100(i think its 100) that creates a 500 car smog exemption for each year. the only thing that confuses me about this is because i see most people that go this route are using cars from the 60's and 70's i have not seen anyone use a 90's car(mine is a 1997) so i will continue my research on this, but based on California's requirements my car definitely meets the specially constructed aspect.

So the only true hurdle with my car, besides all the man hours and hard work, is SMOG

the makinen did come in LHD form aswell so don't see why making it rhd would make it more authentic looking, a lhd makinen is just as authentic as a rhd one

heres a couple,

i think the price on the bottom tme is fake there is no way its that cheap if so i'll buy it and ship it to my grandparents in portugal.

idk if any has said anything about it being authentic cause its rhd, i don't feel that way. but im going rhd because its different over here so it puts me a step above, and also i can use the auto climate control since its rhd

thats cool, didnt know a few of those points... i know about the motor swap stuff.. been there, done a few of those..lol... as long as the motor is the same year as the chassis or newer.. ill have to pick your brain alot more when i get closer to possibly doing this myself... as i already have a spare evo 9 longblock and tranny just lying around might as well put it to good use..lol

i bought an e30 M3 which only came in LHD we drive on the left in ireland so need RHD cars, it was far too dangerous to overtake on normal roads as i was unsighted, couldn't relax while driving it so sold it again soon after,

this car wont be a daily driver, it will rarely be street driven and i love driving slow so no need to overtake any vehicles so i will be fine.

Firewall is almost completely out the right side and middle are completely out

so i took a lot of time doing this to make sure to not mess anything up, well to not mess much up lol. anyways its been very tedious, but it pays off in the end. as you can see

its not in all the way, i gotta clean everything up and massage it a bit so it will be in perfect, but now im uber excited sucks it wont be ready for mod but o well.

looks great! i think thats a MUCH better way of doing things than 99% of other people.... remove it from the spot welds...most people just cut wherever they want, and throw it together... still need to get my *** over to see the project!
