CF vs RS trunks

Looking for opinions from the people who actually have or have had a CF trunk...

I was looking to go wingless, so a week or two back, I removed the wing, but the paint under it was garbage thanks to the double sided tape perma-bonding to the paint... Either way, the quotes I have gotten to weld the trunk and paint it are absurbly high, so I am not planning on going that route.

For this reason I was planning on going one of two routes... a junkyard 02-03 wingless lancer or RS trunk and get it painted or a CF trunk...

Here are my thoughts on both...

- wingless lancer or RS trunk painted...

PROS: one and done... simple, don't have to worry about the trunk rocketing off into space when you hit the latch button, OEM fitment
CONS: I can get a deal on a new Seibon trunk, when all is said and done, the Seibon only costs approx $75-100 more

- CF trunk...

PROS: lighter, looks nice, comes completely holeless (I don't like the shiny chrome trunk keyhole on my all black, "stealthy" car)
CONS: questionable fitment, a little more cash, I live in NJ and the temp/weather ranges greatly, I am worried about fading/bubbling/warping etc, I have heard you have to remove the "trunk popping mechanism" or your trunk will launch off your car (not literally)

... so my questions:

- are all my PROS and CONS about CF accurate?
- what is the actual weight savings using a Seibon trunk lid?
- the Evo 8 CF wing fading/bubbingly was a pain in the ***, is this going to be the same pain in the ***?
- how do you get the trunk open without a keyhole and with the latch disabled?

Sorry if any of these are rookie questions... I haven't had much experience with CF body parts

first of all i would not buy seibon garbage i have a Viz cf trunk i had to modify the latch alittle to get it to fit and drill a lager hole on the support latches but nothing difficult. the trunk weighs like 8-10 pounds. you are correct in your pros and cons. you can have the trunk recleared so it does not persay fog up or bubble etc. I have a complete write up with pics of a cf installed as i dont feel like copying pasting etc so here is my direct link to my install with how to do it and it addresses your concerns as well enjoy. LOL the only time you will see my car wingless LOL

i would go with the carbon fiber trunk because they weigh a couple pounds less than the OEM trunk. Vis or saibon are two good carbon fiber manufactures that will not fade in the sun.

Can't go wrong with OEM. No surprises and it will last provided it's taken cared of..

If its a 500 dollar hood/trunk its most likely going to weigh more than your oe hood/trunk.

OEM FTW, i dont think the hassle and the little weight savings is worth it imo. and unless your paying top dollar for a hood or trunk, fitment is going to be mediocre, and the weaves probably are wavy.

if you have the stock trunk springs in, the wingless trunk will shoot up fast when you pop it. I have a cf trunk, and took out both springs and to hold up the trunk, my friend made a bar with a magnet on the end of it to hold up the trunk.

get the cf just make sure you always take care of it. If not just paint over it. If your a cf fanatic then do it. The problem cf always has is that it fades. All you have to do is reclear it.

I bought a carbon trunk for the same reasons you listed.

SEIBON trunks are GARBAGE. If you want a nice carbon trunk... you're HONESTLY looking at 1500 dollars.

I bought an MR trunklid that I'm weld up the holes on and have painted to match my car.

DO NOT GET THE CARBON TRUNK UNLESS IT COSTS MORE THAN 800 bucks!!!! Seibon is crap crap crap crap crap

You can get a quality CF trunk lid without paying $1500. I got my EvoDave CF trunk lid for I think $500 - $600 + shipping. Also, I've seen used but very good condition CF trunk lids for sale in the $500 range; from EvoDave, Robi, etc.

I think the company that Robi gets his CF trunk lids from sells them for $500 as well, but I hear they can be difficult to get ahold of and setup a deal. For $1500 I know where you can get a quality dry carbon CF trunk lid.

What people say is true though, they will likely fade over time, depending on how well you care for them and how much sunlight they see. My car has been sitting in the sun for a while now at a shop and I'm sure the trunk lid clearcoat will not look the same.

I appreciate all the feedback... it has helped me make a more well informed decision.

Tell you the truth the CF trunk sounds like a pain in the ***. The only reason I considered it was because I could get a really good deal on a new Seibon CF Trunk... the difference between the junkyard trunk painted and the Seibon CF trunk was only going to be approx $100, so I figured... hey, for some wait savings $100 may be worth it... but, from what everyone is saying Seibon is garbarge and CF trunks in general are "higher maintenance" (well, at least higher maintenance than I am looking for)... plus, OEM is predictable, and I like that.

Thanks again everyone!!
