Neither, I used a Dremel to cut it. I did learn that you should cut about a 1/16" into the black. If you hit the clear, it shows through.

Solar: I didn't want to have that look. I'd rather have it all orange. If I can get the clear cover from Japan for the driving light, I'll take them apart and replace that peice.
I did remove it to paint. I taped the driving light area off because it doesn't have any other reflective surfaces.

interesting that you use a dremel, never thought of that. I bet it make the job easier and faster then to heat it up. Is it the little circle cutter( dont know what is its actual name ) that you are using? Any comment or places I need to watch out before I start playing with my dremel?

These are really close to be authentic MR heads and tails, really nice job done here. How much time did it take total?

Great Job! How did you re-seal it after cutting with dremmel? Also did you cut the tails also?

Yeah, the round cutting wheel. Take your time and remove the cutter every few seconds to cool, otherwise it grabs the plastic. Be prepared to be hit with hot melted plastic, unless you wear long sleeves. Safety glasses a must. Stay away from the clear plastic, cut just inside it on the black.
I used standard black silcone to seal them back. leave the bulbs out to vent, (keep from fogging lense).
Tails took me about 5-6 hours. Heads took 4-5 hours.
I baked heads at 250 for 9 minutes, came right apart. When I resealed them, I stuck em together and put them in for 5 mins, then pushed together.
I've already washed it and no leaks or fogging
I used masking tape to hold tails together overnight to let silicone set. Rubber bands would be better.
On heads I removed, wires, adjuster cable, bulbs. Everything else ok.

I hate to say this but after looking at the MR headlight and our USDM headlight, it seems that the clear lense are bigger than our orange lens. If you ever get that piece, it wont fit right and would need some modification to fit it. Just my .02. Good luck and good job on your headlight/tailight mod.

solar,

i think its of the same size. I guess its the way the headlights are taken (pictured) that makes it look smaller/bigger.

I just want to clarify that MR headlight looks exactly the same as the VII headlight except it was blackout and have HID/foglight. I just happened to do a blackout housing on a VII headlight and I found out that the orange lens on the bottom was smaller than VIII's headlight. I was going to put the orange lens to the VIII but it doesnt fit right because the orange lens was too small. I think the clear lens on the MR headlight was on the headlight lens cover.

Remove the bulbs and as much other stuff as you can, but as short a time it's in the oven (I used 250F for 9 minutes to dissmantle and 5 minutes to stick em back together), I had no problems.
