Black Evo Polish

Since I have lots of ice outside and can't go anywhere I decided to mess around and polish some of my Evo. Haven't done it since I got the car for lots of reasons but now I have an inside place to work on it and some free time.

My questions are for you guys that enjoy detailing and polishing your cars. I have a '06 Black Evo. After cleaning and clay barring a fender, I decided to test some of the different polishes I have to see what works best on these cars. I have two different buffers, multiple types of pads, and many different compounds and polishes.

Buffers; Snap-On High Speed (rotary), Porter Cable random orbital

Polishes; 3M Perfect-It 3, Menzerna ( Power Gloss, Intensive Polish, Final Polish ), AIM Chemicals Black Gold (Polish)

Pads; Yellow Cotton Pad, Yellow, Orange, White, Black, Green, and Blue foam pads (some waffle pads and some flat)

After testing different combinations I could not get the imperfections out (spider webbing or what ever you want to call it).

How have you done it? What worked best for you?

No matter what I seem to use black never came out perfect for me. I've used ice, turtle wax, and a few others. I think black is a lost cause

omg don't use turtle wax I swear it scuffs it more. My tb 9 has 20k miles and it's already starting to get scuffs. I used turtle wax and it seemed to make it worse. Now I'm really considering getting it buffed at a body shop lol. Nothing I do seems to work. But I love black so much I wouldn't consider any other colour no matter how much of a PITA it is haha...

It's possible to get black to look good, I would recommend taking your car to a professional though... Turtle wax or any hand polish won't do anything, you need machine polishing

What polish did you use to buff the one in the picture?

As far as taking it to a "professional" I am, me. Did detailing for a living for the last 17 years. I wanted opinions on what others have used to polish their black Evo 's.

As far as waxes go this Evo will get Zymol Atlantique.

Oh sorry, I must have read someone else's comment about turtle wax and thought it was yours.

That picture I believe was Poorboys SSR2.5 and SSR1 on orange and white pads respectively. I dont care for those polishes, but I had some leftover from a while ago. I would like to try Menzerna

I was wondering about Poorboys, but I have read a lot of mixed reviews. I like getting other opinions on polishes and don't mind trying different ones. I love the general results I get with Menzerna. This Evo was neglected badly by the previous owners ( at least thats my opinion) and needs really deep buffing to fix the paint.

I hate turtle wax, or any parts store wax for that matter.

Post a pic of your spiders webs.

CG v series worked well for me, their aio polish seems to tackle most jobs with a filler wax. Are you trying to completely correct it I'm assuming?

Don't have a before and after of the fender, but the driver rear door gives you an idea of how bad the spider webbing is.

The front fender was done with everything cold ( may or may not be a good thing ) and only one round of buffing ( with three steps to a round ).

I don't really want to wet sand the whole car, which is the main reason I wanted to know what others were using.

I got pretty good results from Meg's d300 with the Meg's microfiber pads and a harbor freight da. It was my first time using a buffer so I'm sure some one with experience can get a lot more correction out of it. When temps warm up around here I'm gonna try m105 for the deeper stuff

I've been detailing for only 3 years now and all of the vehicles that I have detailed have been neglected/mistreated. They've been taken through car washes and were driven around without any sealant/wax for years until I got into detailing. What has worked for me is...

Polisher - Griot's random orbital

Pads and Polishes- Lake County pads ... Orange with Meg 105 , White with Meg 205, Red with
Chemical Guy glaze, Red with Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant, and then Red with two coats of Blackfire Midnight Sun Carnauba Wax.

The two coats of wax over that sealant is amazing if you've never tried it before. I'm a newb to detailing but I research the heck out of something once I get into it lol. I need to invest in a decent camera to capture before and after pictures. I recently purchased an TB Evo 9 and it is my first black vehicle that I've ever owned. My other vehicles are white and silver. I'm beginning to realize how much everything shows on black but I love the challenge. It drives me nuts though that my random orbital still leaves marks. I figured that the Meg 205 would be fine enough since my go to methods have been working fine with all the other vehicles. I also have a Makita but i used that with the 3m perfect it on a black pad and left holograms... I'm still learning as I go. =]

Can you feel any those with your fingernail? I would give the megs 105,205 etc series a try and start with an orange pad and go from there since youre using an orbital. Ive had good luck with CGs polishes, glazes and some waxes but their compounds leave something to be desired. The v series is good and works great, but its four different steps and I dont have time to usually do that.

Theres so many ways you can tackle this its hard to give you one answer for it. I dont think just a polish will get those out, id definately start with a compoud and go from there.

I love 50/50 splits. I want to try meguiars and menzerna next. I recently bought Adam's orange and white but got similar results to poorboys. I'm looking for that easy to use, quick results polish but maybe I'm off in lala land expecting to have my cake and eat it too

This is one of the reasons why I wanted to ask what others are using . Looks like I will be putting in the hours for the correction and polish now and I will go back to a maintenance polish after that. My Durango is black and the wife and I spend around 20 hours on it when we first got it and then only waxed it after that. People still think that I polish it all the time .
