does the stock evo wing serve a purpose or just for looks?

just wondering if it actually held the rear down like a wing should.
people say it doesnt block their vision but i find mine hiding cars at certain distances behind me a lot.
i like the look of the car with and without it so im just curious if it really has a positive effect on handling...
also, does anyone know if they have an aftermarket one thats similar to that of a skyline or more "japanese drift" like. kinda just scooped off the trunk

Wing is mostly for looks it wont do you any good till your at speeds of over 100 mph (maybe more) then it adds a little bit of downforce to the back of your car but for normal street driving its just a looks thing as far as aftermarket you can get just about anything you want there is someone out there who makes it even if its a universal thing you might have to drill holes but I'm sure whatever you want out there you can get if you look around enough
From what I have read Mitsubishi puts a lot of effort and wind tunnel time into the design of the rear spoilers for the Evolution series. Although like you said it would only work at higher speeds.

It is functional as stated. Besides identifying the car as an EVO to the "with it" crowd, it really irritates some people. Although I get teased about it and seldom drive at speeds where it can do some work, the spoiler remains. Perhaps a monument to my mid life crisis or maybe I just like to drive a street legal race car. Would anyone seriosly consider taking the spoiler off of their Porsche?

I read it was like 72lbs at 110 mph. Who knows for sure. I can say this, I had my wing off for a couple weeks and at speeds over 80mph, I can tell an obvious difference in the way the car drives. It becomes much more "twitchy" at speed w/o the wing.
I tell eveyone that the wing makes the car go faster. The chicks dig it. The cops also really like the wing.

In reality - it does work. For a four door brick the car is really stable at er...uhm...high speeds. I'm thinking of getting rid of it with a trunk lid swap though.

i took it off,and i did feel any differents at all.went up to 120 without the wing, chande a lane, and it feels the same to me.i put the wing back on for now, since i can find the time to feel the holes anytime soon.i think i'm goona buy a cf trunk anyways.
I'm wingless here, 04 RS.
I can't compare to winged versions but mine seems to handle just fine even at excessive speed.
I do like the look though, kinda adds to the aggressiveness. Anyone want to swap with RR RS trunk?
