nope, what they said is true, you should replace all four tires. For those that are telling him that he doesnt need to, you are the ones that he shouldn't listen to. Just think about the depth of the tire. If you have less rubber on a tire, are all your tires rotating at the same rate?

AWD is awesome until you need new tires....

The tech was correct to some degree about the difference in diameter on the tires. Running a new tire to a worn tire is like running a different profile tire (like a 235/40/17 V.S. 235/45/17 ) The difference in the tire profile is enough to put excessive strain on the rear LSD and more importantly the viscous coupling in the center diff. The extra strain on these components can lead to premature failure.

The EVO is my 4th fulltime AWD car, and I have just gotten used to buying tires in sets of 4...

What if you were running with less tire pressure(like 10psi less) in one wheel for a little while? You think that's enough to "F" things up? Thanks.

I was just thinking. if you have an 03-04 evo with the open front diff. could you just swap out the uneven tires to the front since there is no LSD. just as a quick fix untill you can get new tires.

Most small punctures are fixable. If not, then 2 tires should be replaced. Never heard of having to replace all four. Oh well, atleast you have new tread! Always look on the bright side of life.

Couldn't they shave a tire to match the correct wear?

yes this is a problem. But you should be checking your air presures on a regular basis right? hint hint nudge nudge wink wink

aww plz u are tellingme that all 4 tires wear evenly???? even if the car is well aligned 1 or 2 tires will be more used than the others, yes the rate will be different, but IT WONT HURT ANYTHING because the difference is still small.

that's why you rotate your tires every 5k miles.

If that was the case I would of spent at least 5 thousand in tires the last year probably closer to ten. Yes the rating will not be appropriate for higher speeds but man did they con you.

You got taken to the cleaners unless you had LOTS of wear on the other three tires.....

to my understanding it was that all 4 tires need to be spinning the same speed or else the lsd will kick in but if one tire was spinning differently than the lsd will try to correct it and burn itself out after many miles. So I called mitsu and the service tech said tread does NOT come into play unless the tires are balding. I've been had. =(

I know we could do this back and forth, but the fact remains, if there is a signidicant difference in tire diameter (read 1/4" +) you ARE going to cause problems with your drivetrain. Talk with three Mitsu techs and I promise you will get three different answers. If you got screwed it was only that they could not patch your tire.
