AWD is whack
you got hosed man... hosed... those scumbags at Firestone are real P.o.S... they are nothing but a bunch of uneducated hessian morons... and their company sucks too... they don't know ****... they f'd up my wheels changing to winter tires and said it's perfectly normal because of the wheel weights... even though you can CLEARLY see where their multimillion dollar machine grabbed the wheel and chattered across it... they fed you a line of B.S... even their higher ups are trash... going on my 3rd week waiting for the DM to call... i had it, and the B.B.B. is getting a report on them, plus i'm going to sue the hell out of them...
if you were to put on one 215/50-17 on there, yes, you'd run into issues... there is not enough thread on our stock tires to cause alarm from a partially worn tire to a new one... it's not like you're putting on Mickey T's super-dupper-nascar-hessian muddin' tires with a 6" deep thread pattern on a truck with 3 worn-out belts showing tires... Firestone is trash... plain and simple... Looks like it's time for you to file a report as well...

bs just keep pairs the same. if you're worried about the same wear... think about it... do you think just because your tires have the same mileage they have the same diameter? they're ALL different. look at all the people that have worn out front tires from track days... you think they're diffs are burnin' up? not something to worry about.
the auto produce boss evo used to run two different width tires of the same profile which means they are different diamters slightly. they run three clutch type diffs and don't worry.

I went to firestone and discount tires, both said it will ultimately mess up the transmission and the lsds because one is running faster than the other 3. So now i'm out 550.00 just because of a stupid nail. Had to vent..........

Under pressure, he probably didn't want to "risk" any damage to his car. I would have told them to put the wheel in the trunk, and I'll slap on the donut to the next tire store.
