Front crossmember tie bars
Front crossmember tie bars
I have a question, I know a lot of people have to use washers to space their aftermarket front tire bars to clear the exhaust, are you losing much rigidity by spacing it further from the chassis?
kinda hard to tell since it takes a lot to flex the car anyways.the only badside i could think of using spacers is making the bar too low that you might scrape it or hit small objects on the ground.i used to had spacers before on my car till i hit a rock while doing some backroad driving and this bent my mounting points for the bar
Spacing it will lose some rigidity. We've seen some spaced so far that they've caused the car to bottom out (as mentioned above). The WORKS Croxx Plate II will help alleviate both issues
I ended up fabricating some custom spacers from aluminum bar stock. My Vishnu exhaust came with a set of aluminum spacers, but they were taller than I needed to clear the down pipe.
I went to a steel supply and purchased some pre-cut aluminum blanks that I used a drill press to put the needed hole into. After that I de-bured them and painted them black. The size I used was 3/4" thick (chasis to bar) by 1/2" wide by 1 1/4" long. You'll need to find longer hardened bolts as well.
I wouldn't worry too much about using spacers as long as you have good mounting blocks. If you look at the OEM set-up it's already spaced away from the chasis by about 1/2" by the mounting points.
While there probably is a hint more flex with spacers, if it were significant I think the bolts holding the crossbars would tend to bend or break. My car is pretty heavily modified (both engine and suspension) and has seen plenty of track days without any problems using these spacers.
