alignment question and help for setup.
ok, I recently sold my 03 evo and got an 06. Just autoxed my 06 for the first time after being aligned yesterday. My 06 is alot more tail happy then my 03, as far as setups the only main difference is in rear camber. Also could be because the tires have only 700 miles on them . Anyways here are the specs tell if you guys think these are ok. I"m alittle nervous about how sensitive the car is, compared to what I was used to. I'm sure it will just take alittle time, but I wanna do some lapping days this year, and I wanna be safe and not oversteer to much. Those of you that understand alignement well can hopefully offer me some insite..
specs.
Front
camber -2.5 both sides
toe -0.03 both sides
rear
camber -1.0 both sides
toe left -0.07
toe right -0.06

Try increasing you rear -ve camber to -1.2 to -1.5 to dial out some of the oversteer ... Also are you on aftermarket suspension? Because the stock front camber maxes out at -2.0 to -1.5 ....
The 2.5 deg neg in front camber will cause excessive inner tread tire wear. Change this to 1 deg neg and you will have good tire wear and it will also dial out some of the oversteer. The rest of your settings are great!
see i had the opposite effect on mine. it's pretty neutral right now, but i want more oversteer. i have buddy club racing spec coilovers on my EVO IX MR...
front settings are
-.5 camber both sides
0.00 toe both sides
rear
-1.3 camber both sides
0.16 toe in both sides
we can't get the rear toe in line or the camber because of how low the car is. the suspension appears to have more adjustment, but it won't budge when we try to adjust it. why i let them set my front that way i have no clue, but i played with the damper settings and the car handles really well now. neutral, but it rotates. it's not as tail happy as it was stock tho...i miss that. it handles better than stock, but it can still be improved... as soon as i can get a day off, i'm bringing it in to get the front set to -2 camber and leaving the toe at 0.00 on both sides. that should make it perfect.
i just competed in my first autocross since the suspension change. the car did great. shocked the **** out of me lol for the first run i forgot to stiffen up the dampers cuz i got to the event late and didn't even think they'd let me run. after the first run i adjusted the dampers and since the surface we were running on had a lot of loose dirt, rocks, etc, i switched the ACD to gravel and the car became a BEAST. the first run i was rubbing tire on the front end, and understeering like a beast. the second run i knocked about 4 seconds off my time. by the end of the day i was running with the miata's. still needs a little more tweaking, but the EVO will dominate all lol good luck with the setup man

ok, this makes no sense to me- exactly what setup did you have on your 03?
cuz unless you had MR bilsteins and swift springs on it, then NO, the main difference is the the entire suspension is different.
first off- i think you're better off working with a really good performance chassis shop, and letting them guide you toward solutions, rather than looking for answers here.
that said, my worthless opinion:
personally, i think you'd be in better shape if you'd done at least one autocross first, then started screwing with springs and such- i'm more inclined to suspect your springs then your alignment settings, but you'll never know now.
i'm suspicious that your springs are balanced more toward the rear than your 03 (and also more than stock), and you're stuck with trying to fiddle around with camber to correct that behavior. if so, that is going to net you a less than optimal setup- you're using your alignment to compensate for poor balance (at least for your taste) rather than fine tuning good balance.
does your car have front lsd? that may contribute, also. no idea how that affects autox balance...?
now, i don't know where you got your alignment specs, cuz they are not evoM standard, but you're very close to what i've found to be my ideal settings after much tinkering over the last three years- -2.5f, -1.5r, slight toe-in all around. i'm on stock dampers and H&R springs ('03), with perrin rear sway and links, and cusco camber plates. i feel like my balance is nearly ideal for me, and with a quick tweak of the rear bar i can stiffen up the rear for autox, or soften it up for more power-on stability on track and fast roads.
but i do like my rear camber within 1 degree of front- therefore -1.5r for -2.5f. i don't like the balance when the differential is greater than that, and it may be enough to cause the twitchiness you're feeling. worth a shot. if it doesn't work, i'd think about replacing the springs, maybe going back to stock and working from there.
and don't listen to the people who tell you -2.5 front camber will roast your insides fronts, that has far more to do with toe- especially take heed of that Zero Toe mantra that somehow got to be "common knowledge" on the boards.
i drive the cr*p outta my tires- track days, autox, backroad bombing on weekends and commuting every day. at zero toe and -1.5, i corded my inside *and* outside corners on two sets of fronts within ~7500 miles. at the prodding of my alignment tech/chassis guru, i went to -.01 toe and -2.5, and i've had very even wear for the last two years, getting about 15k out of the last two sets of tires. i never would have thought it was possible, and did not willingly go along with it- everybody on evoM knows better, right? i was shocked at the results. oh yeah, handled better, too. no more plowing the front around low-speed, high-g turns. imagine.
but don't listen to me, i'm just another internet dumbass. seriously.
work with your local guru. closely. repeatedly. don't bring him parts and pay him to install them, give him a budget, and ask him what you need. you'll be happier and faster and might even spend less (gasp!).

when I say set up is the same, I was refering to the alignment specs. As far as the springs go, they're the same spring rates, as the tanabes I ran, except they aren't as agressive of a drop. I think it mainly comes down to I need more rear camber. I"m runing less camber in the rear then before, and off throttle left rights make the car tail happy. Also could be becuase the tires need worn in a bit more. I was just posting to get other racers opinons on what they run for alignment. I do work with a performance alignment shop and have been racing for 7 years. I was simply gathering some info before I went and started making changes.
