somebody that understands suspension setups please

i decided to put coilovers on the car to improve the cars handling and also got rid of the front end knock that was driving me crazy was actually getting ready to drive the car into the mistu showroom so i can hear them say thats a normal noise one more time.

when i got them i was excited and forgot to measure some points on the car so i can lower the car correctly with stock ratio back to forth so i had to do it by eye and a picture i had of the car. so right now i couldnt tell you how much i lowered it.

i went and got the car aligned and cornerweighted, the car feels ok but not as stable as my gti felt when i has put coilovers on. it feels like the front is soft and plays a little. maybe the front needs to be dropped a little more?

what i wanted to know is, is there anyway of telling if the car is sitting correctly by giving the alignment and cornerweight settings? here they are:

front: left right

camber -1.14 -0.99
cross camber -0.14
caster 3.47 3.67
cross caster -0.19
sai ----- -----
included angle ----- -----
toe 0.00 0.00
total toe -0.03
turning angle diff ----- -----

Rear:

camber -1.17 -1.09
toe 0.07 0.07
total toe 0.14
thrust angle 0.00

cornerweight #'s

left right

front 964 973

Rear 641 644

Well,

ust my 2 cents but, I just had my car aligned by an excellent shop finally and went with the following setting based on bone stock suspension:

lf -1.9 rf -2.1 (with me in the car it goes to -2 -2
toe 1/32 toe in
lr -.9 rr -1.1 (with me in the car it goes to -1 -1)
toe 1/16 toe in

My first impresion of the toe settings was that I had to keep my hands on the wheel and pay more attention to the road surface. I expected this so I was not caught off guard by it.

I'm thinking that the zero toe up front has the car feeling very free and a bit unstable. What were you running before the coilovers alginment wise? Or am i missunderstanding what you mean by stable?

Stock suspension is hard to improve on when it comes to Evos. Not to mention with Megan coilovers.

Throw some toe in there and count threads for equal height.

In all reality when these coilovers **** you off to the extent of ripping them off your car because you can't get them to handle as good as stock, go ahead and throw some Espelir GT springs over your stock struts and live life happy .

If your toe for front left and right were 0 how was the total toe -.03. Also your car will for more twitchy/eager to turn with aggressive camber like that, I think if anything it is the coilover and not your suspension settings, they all seem to be in the range of what is accpeted as an aggressive street setup. Was the car aligned/weighted with somebody in the seat, if not, then you should do it again.

Did the shop that did the cornerweight and alignment not set ride hight for you? When I did mine on my last evo they adjusted mine for me. I just had it set as close as I could eye ball it when I took it to them and they did the rest. Also it did feel alittle more free after the install. I would think if you go and change the ride hight it will change the weight settings. Not sure on that as I am no expert. Good luck.

Do not heed any of this guys advice, except for maybe the comment regarding the springs. Why would he want/need toe, why do you reccomend it? Counting threads for equal height, yeah....... because if you want it cornerweighted the car is already perfectly balanced with a driver in it...........

The stock suspension is not very hard to improve on, however it is very very very easy to make your suspension worse.

i know what you mean but i didnt change the suspension mostly for handling imporvement, it was more to get rid of the knock which got unbearable.

i see what i wrote in my first post it does sound like i did this for handling purpose more, but it was for the front end knock

If getting rid of the lack of smoothness was your motive for changing out your suspension you went the completely wrong route.

I woud say some bilsteins off of an MR are your only real solution, and if your car must be dropped some swift springs.

mmm the stock alignemnt specs are in the end all suspension thread.

it's not hard to improve the stock suspension... on that same note, not too many people are vested in doing it.

a little off topic, but where was that knock coming from?

i got a funky sound in my front passenger side that has been eluding me and the cracker jack mechanics at mitsu for some time now.

it only happens when i turn my wheel to the right.

did the coilovers fix the problem? because it's starting to drive me insane to the point where i am thinking of getting coilovers to make it go away.

if you do a search for "clunking front end" you see that alot of evos have the noise, mine was the spring hitting the top mount. and mitsu diagnosed it as a normal noise, i told them i dont think a noise that could be heard by people from the sidewalk when im taking a turn a normal noise, but they didnt care.

mine started with the right and eventually it was both sides, got so annoying that i found myself taking my dad's jeep once in awhile to avoid hearing the noise for a couple of hours. and yes the car has been noise free for a little over a month now
