How to tell when brakes are ready to be replaced?

Just curious on this. I took a quick peek at the brakes as they have been squeaking a lot in the past few days. Now normally I would look at the pads and determine how much "meat" is left on them. They seem to be enough to my liking right now ie maybe 5-6mm in depth. The ONLY thing that bothers me is that if I look closely at the brackets of the brake, it is very close to the rotor.

I'm not sure if it's just the caliper design that stays there, and the pads flex in to grab the rotor. Or... if I really have less clearance and I should be looking for pads quick! I wish I could take a picture, but the angle I get is just horrible to take a picture without taking off the wheel.

Thanks for the noob question, I'm just too used to the older DSM calipers or just to hear the squeal/scratch from the metal guards.

Mine have squeaked from day one. I just keep a eye on them to see how they are wearing.

our brakes will squeak since they're performance oriented. if you get race pads, then they'll squeak even more.

The brakes squeaking have been discussed over and over, I want to have a definite answer on how to measure brake pad wear/replacement. Also, if this bracket piece is always that close to the rotor?

Anybody?

ok another newbie question, anybody think by changing the rotors to drilled/slotted OEM replacement brembos will help to ease off the squeaking?

Sorry, I should have posted earlier. I didn't even get close to the answer I was looking for here. I called the dealership and spoke with a tech there.

THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF PADS ARE 2MM when they should be changed. So that being said, I have a lot more to go

Mine lasted 40k miles. I decided to changed them when it squeaked too loud to drive.

Your brack light comes on and stays on because you might be low on your brake/clutch fluid. That doesn't mean you have to change your brakes all the time. If dealer's telling you need new brake because of that make sure you check your oil level before you take in into dealershop...

Disc brake pads should be changed when they reach 1.5-2mm at the lowest point. What I mean by that is you have to look carefully at all four corners/sides of each pad. If you only look at one pad on one side it might be at 5mm while the inside of that pad or another pad might actually be worm more to 2mm or whatever. The point is that pads can wear uneven.
