Lowering Springs - Bad Idea?
Lowering Springs - Bad Idea?
I'm wondering if any of you Evo owners have experienced a decrease in handling performance after installing lowering springs. I have searched the forum but haven't found any people who think this is a bad idea. A friend who is an Evo IX owner refuses to put them on because he experienced a negative change in the suspension characteristics on his XIII. I had some Eibach Pro-kit springs on my RSX and it handled great afterwards and I was thinking of putting some Tein's on my Evo IX MR - is this a bad idea? Is the stock setup better than if I lowered with high-quality springs? Should I just save up and spring (no pun intended) for some coilovers? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...
search...i'm sure this has been covered.
since i'm nice....most guys will say no and save up for coilovers. but it really depends what you're going to do with your car.
- if you're going to track often then save for coilovers
- if you're going to track occasionally then save for coilovers
- if you're not going to track at all then you can go with springs. but note that some springs will actually decrease the steering ability of an already good handling car.
springs:
- Tein S-techs are only for looks. they drop it so much and the springs are too soft
- many will say, if you MUST go with springs then go with Swifts. those are the best springs that slightly improves handling.

Thanks for taking it easy on me - I couldn't find anything that said that they were a flat-out bad idea like my friend says. Thanks for the recommendation on Swifts. I'll probably just end up getting some basic Tein coilovers though...
Common misconception is that all springs for EVO are junk. This is NOT true.
Springs that are too low, too soft, made with poor materials, have quality issues, will result in crappy handling and even worse ride quality.
BUT that is not all springs. Swift springs vastly improve handling, and ride quality improves as well. Spring rates are up quite a bit from stock, but match the stock dampers very well. Fact is that the stock dampers are overdamped from the factory, so a stiffer spring works out very well.
Do a search for Swift springs and you'll see only positive reviews from both daily drivers and track guys alike.
In my opinion, you will KNOW when you need coilovers.....too many people jump right into them and won't take advantage of them.

P.S. - we are developing our own performance spring for EVO. The goal is to be an alternative to cheap coilovers for people who aren't quite ready for that, while improving handling (and ride quality) greatly without the owner worrying about blown coilovers, quality issues, etc. We want to bridge the gap between stock and high quality coilovers....

That's exactly what I wanted to find out - thanks a lot for the input. Is there a particular model of Swift springs that compliment the Bilstein shocks on the MR in handling and ride quality while improving upon that wheel gap?
the MRs bilsteins have special springs...make sure you get the right ones.
hey GTWORKX...for those springs that you guys are trying to develop. i'll gladly be one of your test cars if you'd like.

There are so many crap threads on this site that searching is near impossible anymore.
Yeah, I've read in several mags that the wrong springs can turn your Evo's handling to junk. The question then seems to be which springs are recommended, and which are junk? The Swifts seem to have a fairly good rep, as do most of the major names. Probably as a rule of thumb I'd stay away from the no-name eBay specials.
