Angry Tire Scapling...please Help

I was driving my EVO last night when I heard a loud clanging noise coming from the front passenger side wheel well. I pulled over and couldnt determine what the problem was. I drove down the road and eventually the clang stopped as if maybe something was caught inside the wheel well.

As I pulled out of my driveway this morning my tires felt like they were flat. I got out to find no problems once again. After work I was studying underneath my car when I noticed that the inside of both front tires were completely bald/scalped off like someone took a grinder and ground of all the tread from the inside of each tire.

Any ideas what this could be? Suspension problem, alignment (seems ok)? The tires only have about 14k on them and the outsides are perfectly fine.

Please help!

Yes they are. But when I jacked up the car there was strips of tire hanging from the scalloped ring around the inner portion of the two front tires. Is it possible in -10 temps (today) they could scallop off that fast. Or do you think it might be suspension related or even worse?

no it happened to me already. since we had decent weather i used my summer wheels with the advans on a little too long this season and one of my tires ended up the same way with the other just about ready to get there.

it only happned with the front ones becuase of the stock negative camber that comes with the car.

So the very inner part of both of the front tires scalloped off (looks almost like someone took something sharp and just ripped out a bead of tire all the way around the wheel)?

I can take pix tomorrow to show you.

Do stock advans come on EVOs here in NY. I bought mine in CA. Do all cold climate owners have to buy new tires only after a two weeks of cold weather?

Thanks!

yea advans are standard in the country.

i'll get pics of mine to show u.

i think anything below 40 degrees the advans get too hard and there wont be any traction. i would suggest getting an all season tire like falkens ziex or the toyo proxes.

I drove to NYC from Syracuse yesterday for a job interview, parked my car and on the way home was when I heard the noise from the wheel well. Is it possible for the tires to scalop off like then from about 8-10 hours of cold driving?

Thanks again...send me those pics!

If the inner egde of the tires is wearing then you are out of alignment...too much toe...get it back to stock alignment at 0 if I am not mistaken-- Regards,

toe in/toe out causes excess tire wear like that.

Basically, your car's alignment is out of wack when this happened.
I had the alignment checked on both of my evo's and they were off by quiet a bit.

For all new evo owners, make sure you get your alignment checked within the first 500 miles (it's free from the dealer BTW).
Free adjustment period is first 12 months.

It happens a lot on Evos with stock tires who haven't gotten a good alignment.

No, I got a set of 255/40-17 Falken Azeni RT-615s when my Advans got low, but they still had enough tread for me to be able to sell them for $150, heh. Yes, I also have an extra set of rims (Rota Torques) for my Blizzaks, which are on the car for the Winter.

That happened to me, but only on one rear tire, and It happened because I picked up a rock while driving on the highway, and it shattered my rear passenger side splash gaurd, a pointy part jabbed itself into my tire and scalopped like that only about two inches worth.
