Stiffest sidewall I've seen in a while..my local tireshop mounting machine needed help from 2 guys with pry bars to get them on the rims and sounded like Hoosier slicks when they were air seated !! Handling is on par with a Kuhmo MX, better hydroplane resistance in heavy rain, and turn in at speed is as good or better than the stock Advans. I have yet to hear them squeal when pushed and , whereas the rear Advans would slip a tad on WOT out of a medium curve (I'm dyno'd at 460 WHP), they grip and go. A nice surprise for the price but I don't have a clue where they may be sold at now since the Tire supplier in Raleigh, NC has no more ( I wanted to stock up) .

If you can locate a set, give them a try....well worth it.

Cheers,
Craig

read post #6 bottom paragraph ... might make too much sense for ya...

lots of people have 3 tire levels they change through out the year

Level 1 - daily driving , long trips, w/e performance , drive over ur house carelessly

Level 2 - summer time / auto X / hillclimb / high performance/price / get the point

Level 3 - winter time / snow fun/rally mode/ lets drift around light pols in the parking lot and tear up the backwoods rally paths

its not about the $ price of the tires. is how wisely u use the $ per tire.

sry got off topic.. anyway ... please update thread with the current cheap tires for DD with long thread life....

I'm all for cheap tires, I put too many miles on my car to be wearing down expensive sticky rubber driving down the highway. I've got a set of star specs for when I go to the track but there's no need for all that grip on the street.

My current "cheap" all season DD tire Sumitomo HTR+ -decent grip for an allseason, decent wear and great wet traction.

For a "cheap" dedicated winter tire I'm looking next at the General Altimax and for summer the Hankook V12 Evo.

Just bought a set of HTR Z III's. They are still breaking in but so far loving the grip. I'll be attending an autoX on Sunday so will report back.

Sumitomo HTR III and Hankook Evo v12 the two less expensive tires to look at.

Z1* would be my choice for an OEM replacement.

Getting a cheap tire for DD/Commuting is fine. Don't know why it gets all the hate from some people. Those of us who know the limits of an Evo on the track usually don't feel the need to 'prove it' on the street. It's not like someone is going to point at your car on the road and state: "ZOMG NOOOOOOOO WHAT A NICE CAR BUT IT HAS SUMITOMO HTRZIII WTHBBQ?" And if they did, their approval isn't worth a damn anyways. I will state, however, that if you're looking for a "Cheap" and "Awesome tire to HPDE/Autox" for my "FP Black Evo.." now you're worthy of the point-and-laugh. But to get A to B, it's not worth wasting cash on tires like Z1 Star Specs, etc. Save that rubber for the track days (my Z1 * Specs are reserved for wet track days).

Also, guaranteed if you're pushing the limits of your tires on the street, you're driving like a dousche. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Sorry for the /rant, but back on topic:

Best cheap back-for-the-buck summer/three season commuter tire: Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 (Max Performance Summer) $100/each. Sacrifices minimal attributes of a Star Spec with much less cost.

For all-season, i've used www.bestusedtires.com for my old Audi.

You glance over and see the guy next to you in the giant pickup is fully committed to a lane change in your direction and hasn't bothered to look first. In that instant do you still want your cheap DD tires?
