Cheapest tire contest. I have A046's on MR BBS's for autox. So this purchase is for daily shredding on stock Evo 8 wheels.
Sumitomo HTR Z 235 45 17 $65
Fusion HRi 225 45 17 $66
Gravel roads, dirty allies, its all good with a tire this cheap. I know what some of you are thinking but this tire's single job is save the Yokohama from a nail or a vandal.

I used to buy used Continental ContiSport II's from the BMW/Benz dealer who would replace all 4 for customers when only 2 were worn, buy them for $20 a piece and they were great tires.

Kuhmo 711s are your best bet. They have been discontinued, but you can still find them on places like EBay.
I've used them for 30k miles, and then another 12k on my new set, and they've held up well. Decent performance, long life, and will take all types of weather (snow included).
Value, cheap tires on an Evo are not a bad thing. Some of us have dedicated sets of wheels and tires for tracking/autoxing, so a high performance tire for daily driving is unnecessary.

bridgestone fusions.
For a crappy *** tire, these things honestly are great. I run them as streets (rare) but more importantly as rain tires, and i've even run them a couple track days in the dry. 320 treadwear grocery getters. I'm amazed. Didn't even chunk the tires on the track. Definate good investment. (wanna say they might have been close to 80 bucks a piece.)

I have heard good things about the Fusions, have not tried them but solid.
I rock Kumhos pretty much all the time however. They sponsor our rally car and I can get most tires at cost for my own car.

Anybody with experience on handling, and steering response with the Sumitomo HTRZ tires?
The ones that are $65 at TireRack.com . They have very good reviews on tire rack, but only one guy with an Evo. They should be extremely sticky for they have a 160 Treadwear. But I am more concerned with steering response, which would come from a nice stiff sidewall.

Heh ... this is a first
usually you hear people asking which is the best tire ... actually its a great idea for those who have dedicated tires of different events and don't mind going through the trouble of changing them.

Z rated Fuzions are darn decent..used to cost $65 but the price is up there now. Some of you may have seen the Italian made Marengoni's(Linea Zeta) on eBay. Bought a set of 255/40-17's for $300 including shipping for the hell of it..W rated and a 2 ply sidewall with Aramid cords. Stiffest sidewall I've seen in a while..my local tireshop mounting machine needed help from 2 guys with pry bars to get them on the rims and sounded like Hoosier slicks when they were air seated !! Handling is on par with a Kuhmo MX, better hydroplane resistance in heavy rain, and turn in at speed is as good or better than the stock Advans. I have yet to hear them squeal when pushed and , whereas the rear Advans would slip a tad on WOT out of a medium curve (I'm dyno'd at 460 WHP), they grip and go. A nice surprise for the price but I don't have a clue where they may be sold at now since the Tire supplier in Raleigh, NC has no more ( I wanted to stock up) .
If you can locate a set, give them a try....well worth it.
Cheers,
Craig

Anyway, the 711 was a wise choice. An ebrake friendly tire is what I wanted.

I had a set on my old 2.5 RS. Very decent tires for the money. Turn it was good, treadwear wasn't horrible and I did quite a bit of snow driving in them in below zero temperatures and they held up much better then I expected.Originally Posted by bomjoon
