Are Sumitomo tires REALLY that bad?

I have got to get some tires. Not just "within the next couple of weeks" but I dont know, YESTERDAY!! I just absolutely do not want to spend over $600 for some tires. My father has been with Goodyear for over 30 years and tells me that Goodyear has a deal with Sumitomo and that they arranged to make and sell the other's tires in their respective markets. So now I ask of THOSE WHO HAVE BOUGHT AND RIDDEN ON THE TIRES (please noone else's biased or uneducated opinions) would you purchase them again? I checked their reviews on the Tire Rack (ps hook me up, I will be grateful) and all the subie and evo owners that replied and left reviews said that they are a great buy. Let me know what you think and as always I appreciate your responses.

Point A to Point B = Yes
Point A to Point B when Point B is either a drag strip, road course, or twisty = Neg

FYI, Goodyear farms out ALOT of tire construction and has for awhile. TBC makes a bunch of their lines for them and Goodyear has them private labeled. Sumitomo might make some of the stuff as well, but nothing that I am aware of that is "performance" sized.

Oh and also let me say that I don't plan on getting another set of rims for the evo- and I do go to the occasional meet and twisty road. I went to Tail of the dragon and that was about the end of the advans.

Anyone have Goodyears on their car??

Tire Rack guys, don't be afraid to chime in...........

You can get 255/40-17 RT-615s for the stock rims for less than $600. I would not touch Sumitomo's again with a 10' pole. I had them on my IS300, but I wouldn't even consider them for my Evo unless they suddenly came out with a race slick that rivaled Hoosiers.

Just take my testimony for what is worth, joke, fact or whatever but base on a financial budget criteria I was forced to buy the cheapest tires possible for my Dodge Stealth R/T TT 9 years ago. Sumitomos were indeed the cheapest tires I could find(about $85 a piece for 245/45/17).

I never care to get performance out of them but based on price I am inclined to say that they are in the lower end of quality, I really don't see many people using them.

I had them on my rsx..worked for what they were for point A to point B..suckd for drag wouldn't get tracktion till high 3rd..for the evo I wouldn't touch them! You degrade the handling ability of the evo when you down grade to such a tire..

I had them...they last long and are soft, handling is greatly reduced. They are also really cheap under 400 shipped.
I just traded my VIII wheels for IX rims and tires. The wheels have Fusion tires on them and these feel better than the sumitomo htrs....

side note: they work in the snow pretty good.

going cheap on tires is the dumbest thing you can do.

They are the most important part of your vehicle......

why anyone would buy a 30 grand performance car, only to cheap out on tires, the single most important facet to a car's performance, is beyond me as well. with taht said, $600 will get you some kumho MXs or RT615s, both are great tires that cost less than the stockers.

Looking for all-season tires, don't want to keep changing rims when it gets cold outside, also it has been known to snow here every now and again. This year we will be snowed in because I bought a lowered evo and anything over 2" will be enough to stop me but (the point) I want all seasons
