Falken rt-615

i just wanted to share my experience w/ rt615's in 255/40/17's. grip wise, i was very impressed considering the price. only when you pushed towards the limit you realize it doesnt have as much grip as the stock advans. nevertheless the wider contact area definetly helped compensate somewhat for it too.

what kills me is the softer sidewalls. it is true what they say, sidewall on the rt615 is definetly stiff compared to other tires out there but i want STIFF because im all about sharp handling. imagine if i went on some wussy tires like kumho MX's, i would be whining and *itching and trying to burn them out asap so i can replace them lol. considering i enjoy that quick response, i always put about 5-6 psi more then recommended oem numbers but still sidewall did not match up to advans. you get what you pay for i guess, yoko advans are expensive but they're worth the $.

its only been 4500 miles(11 month) so most likely these will dry rot before the treads go. i believe i will try nt01's or ra-1's next, hopefully they will be less squishy or atleast more grip(which is a given compared to rt615 hehe)

I use RT-615's in the summer, and run the front at 45psi. no complaints about handling, wear, or turn-in from me.

I am running the RT615's and I think they are great... I did go almost max psi (tire say max 50psi & I went 47psi) so I think that helped

Glad to see some one else backing up what i've been saying abou the falkens. I think the tires might be better if we get them in the correct size 225/45/17. The 255/40 are too wide for the stock 8" rim. Yea they'll fit but for what we're looking for they won't deliver. The 245/45/17 are too heavy 28.5lbs per tire and yes they also have sloppy handle.

Yes you are right the stock Advan's are about the tires you can mount on the stock rim except r-compounds.

wha? oh forgot to say im on FN01RC 17x9's so not too wide. im also very surprised people are running the falkens at such high psi on the street. max psi labeled on the tire does not mean its the psi you SHOULD run. i would think mid 40's only for trackwork else you'll get uneven wear.

For the record, you can run much higher psi for AutoX since higher pressure= tires warm up quicker. Not recommended for the street though.

Do you really think they will dry rot that fast? I hope not, i have mine stored in my shed for now while I run all seasons.

I used the 615s for about 6-8 track days and they were good for learning on. I probably got about 10K out of them including the track use. When they were 90% used up they were insane at the track, but this phase was very short lived as they got slippery then corded shortly after.

I how have a set of 17x9 wheels with 255/40/17 NT01s and they are great! I haven't used any other track tires but the difference is night and day. just to be clear, NT01s are not for street use and while they are probably fine for getting to a track event/autoX on a nice day - don't expect them to be a street tire that you can run all summer. when these wear out I'm going 275 on the 9" rims -- looking at mine it's obvious I can go wider.

and the psi numbers on the door are a good safe all around number... if you understand what you are doing you'll adjust from them as needed. I run 33psi cold for my street tires.

I disagree. people in my autoX region run 275 r-comps on stock wheels. that's too wide IMO, but the falkens in 255 make up for the traction loss of the advans because of the extra width -- they still won't behave as well as the advans.

225 is too narrow except for maybe snow tires.

+1
LOTS of us run the RT615s in 255/40/17 on the stock 8" wheels. Besides, what do you mean by "what we are looking for?" We aren't ALL necessarily looking for the same thing.

The RT615s don't really have THAT soft of a sdiewall. They just seem to because:
- they are not quite as stiff as the Advans
- a 255 is wider on the same rim, so it will feel like the sidewalls are softer. This has nothing, or very little to do with the actual stiffness of the sidewall. Don't believe me? Try driving the same 255 RT615s stretched on a 10" rim, and tell me they have "soft" sidewalls.

The RT615s weren't voted #1 AutoX tire by GRM just because of the price. they do pretty well at the dragstrip too.

Comparing ANY tire that doesn't cost as much to the stock Advans is inappropriate and has been hashed out far too many times anyway. The RT615-s are less than half the cost, and can last a lot longer under similar use. Are they comparable? NO. Are they great tires for the money? YES.
