im kind of a noob but let me tell you what i know:
springs: drop can not be changed, and will damage your struts in 2~3yrs depending on the way you drive and you will have to replace them, they are cheaper...
coilovers: you can change the drop (customize it), the stock struts are replaced, more expensive.

you can go to any online store and read their descriptions to get the idea...correct me if im wrong

spings cheap but cost down the road to parts they mess up
coilover not cheap but do not do to much harm to the bushing ect.

because in coilover there isnt as much PLAY then there is with springs

Most people jump on the "everyone must have coilovers" bandwagon but really have no need for them. If you're not tracking or autocrossing your car, you really don't need coilovers. Get Bilsteins + a good set of springs.

The stiff spring rates from coilovers inevitably put more wear on the rest of the car then a softer spring.

Coilovers have to be rebuilt every so often as well....so yes regular springs can wear out stock dampers, but coilovers wear out too.
