winter tire size for stock wheels

what size tire should i get for the stock wheel. my car's lowered, but not enough to worry about clearance and i may raise it for winter. i'm thinking the wintersport 3ds or lm22 or lm25 but i know i want to go as skinny as possible, but i have no idea what that would be and what size they come in. 225 maybe? is there smaller that would fit?

I think you need to increase the aspect ratio (sidewall) when decreasing width to stay safe. So I think you would be safe running 225/45, but 215 50, maybe 55 would be ideal?

225/45 was the size my winter tire brethren in MI ran. Thinner > wider in the snow.

just flashing back to my days of my 96 Impala SS in the first snowfall before I could swap out to my steelies. It was like running with 2 snowboards strapped to the front.

I went with a 215/50 Blizzak WS-50. Great through the white!

i called tire rack and they seriously told me that only a 235/45/17 fits on the stock wheels. = (
it pissed me off. the guy i talked to was not helpful and was a total douche, maybe he just was having a ****ty day or something but i was extremely disappointed because my experience with tirerack through the web site only has been good.

in the end i got 215/50/17 and they are working out really well. i was told by a local tire shop that's the smallest width that would fit and that the 50 ends up being as tall as the 45 on the 235 widths.

I went with stock size, 235/45/60 in Blizzak WS-60's. Got a great deal on them local. I know I should have gone a little narrower, but I figured stock size was safe and they had them in stock. We dont get a ton of snow either, most of the time its melted off the next few days and we will get another inch a week later. Wanted to maximize my tread in the dry.

I will say one thing though, I wanted the LM25's. I should have got them. The WS-60's are super soft sidewalled, and even just changing lanes sharply at 70 mph I thought I was gonna die. Rear end snapped back and forth like 3 times. I am on KW coilovers though, and havent really changed them from my track set up so might be a touch stiff. Just be real careful when on full winter tires, they arent made for performance driving lol.

Sorry to hear that. Should have given me a call. Remember you guys have a site rep here.

A 225/50 will fit the oe wheels, just a tad taller than stock, and makes load. I've sold that size in snows to EVO guys in the past with no problems.

Bump. Also considering winter tires for my Evo IX on the factory 17" Enkeis. I'd like to go 215 but wanted to see how many people have done it and what they thought.

Running stock size 235/45/17 General Altimax's now they are nothing short of awesome. Previously ran 225's in Blizzacks LM22's they fell short as a tire IMO

Though theoretically with the same tire the thinner tire will prevail in the snow.

I just went with the Blizzak WS70s that tirerack came up with and they work great in snow. (235/45R17)

I wish I had a pic I was going up a hill on new years eve and when I looked in my rear view it look like there was a 5 car accident behind me. There was cars and trucks all sideways on the road. Most of them had to turn around because they couldn't make it up. I ended up driving up that hill a few more times just for fun
