vibration

So after driving to Baltimore yesterday going about 75 i started to feel a really strong vibration in my steering wheel. But it only happens when i go above 65 mph. however when i go around a turn it stops. Then when i straighten out it starts up again. Any clues?

Chris

Check lug nuts for proper torquing and make sure you didn't loose a wheel weight.

Yea what Smikeevo said, I had a wheel come loose on me one time from Discount Tire. If you havent had the car aligned in a while, do that.

I had a similar vibration (above 65, lessened around curves) and it turned out to be a bad tire.

check tires, lug nuts, and make sure you didnt lose a wheel weight...does the vibration also happen when you brake? if so it could be warped rotors

Did you check everything else people mentioned? When was the last alignment also?

Been down this road before...checked balance, alignment, wheel bearings, rotor run out, control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends. In the end it turned out to be strut mounts. At about 68-70-ish mph the steering wheel did the shimmy then subsided at about 85-ish. No shimmy above or below that range.

This was the first thing Robert (Robi) Fuller of Robispec told me...I should've listened. He explained that below a certain speed the rubber in the strut bearing mount was able to damp the harmonic vibration, but within a certain range it wasn't able to because the rubber was fatigued (worn out). I replaced mine with RalliArt Group N bushings...a little stiffer than stock, but not like pillow *****.

If you already have pillow ball mounts, I have no suggestions other than what's in the list I rattled off earlier.

YMMV.

I had that and turn out one of my front tire was chewed up on the inside.
