Rotor thickness question.. how far down?

Was checking some things out on the car today getting it ready for the auto x season next month and thought I should check out the rotor thickness. Mind you my brakes are performing flawlessly, Carbotech XP12 pads, Brembo rotors, ATE Super Blue fluid. Checked the factory specs and the limit is listed at 1.170" Check out my rotors and came up with 1.125".

Acording to the book I need new rotors, but is anyone taking them down further without problems? I had no reason to think they were that worn, just checked them out of spite.

I'm going to order new rotors tomorrow but just wanted to see what others were doing.

If below - replace.

I had a friend in HS drive his Pontiac 3000 way over the rotors min thickness - ended up exploding on him. He had to drive home with no brakes one day after school. He never thought to check them. Picture that on a track or AX event.

As mentioned I'm replacing, ordered new rotors today for $45 a piece brand new.

The one thing I don't get though is why the stock OEM Brembo rotors did not have much of a lip on them, and if you measure over the lip, the do not match the OEM new thickness specs. New rotor is said to be 1.260 thick, Checking part of the rotor that the pads do not touch (inner most towards the center of the hub) its hardly 1.210" or so.

Thanks for posting this, I had meant to measure mine and kept forgetting.

You are on OEM rotors right now right? If not, then maybe they have different specs than the stock ones.

For comparison against your measurements, I fabbed a ghetto gauge and measured from the outer edge. I am on my original OEM rotors. They are 1.23" with about a .01" lip on each side. So total thickness including the lips is 1.25" which is pretty close to the 1.26" you cited. On a quick eyeballing (didn't feel like pulling off the rotor to get to inner edge) it looks like the inner lip is smaller than the outer lip, though that could be because they wear more at the outer edge.

Maybe try measuring from the outer edge?

Also, as SmikeEvo said, cars don't like to have under spec rotors. I have seen a few explode. You might want to keep the old ones just for emergency use, but don't use them for AX
