Snow on the ground

Well...who would have thought on October 23rd we'd have snow. Sure enough we awoke to a dusting of snow this morning.

My all season tires aren't going on until next Wed. so I got the first test drive of the ADVANS on snow. The rumors are true. It wasn't much snow and it didn't last long but it was "interesting" to say the least.

Don't even think about taking these tires through even the smallest amount of snow. (You're welcome Neal).

All kidding aside...the ADVANS are a disaster even in the smallest snow...fun...but impossible to drive even going slow. I felt like I was driving on a frozen lake.

I'll let you know how the all-season tires make out but based on previous experience I'm sur ethey'll be fine.

Snow flake flying all around the NE area this morning too. Got to leave my baby at home and drive my wife car.

Advans is good during summer. It's got good traction over dry or wet road. It's not good if it's pouring wet. Driving through pouring rain is a challenge.

I have some all-season tires on order. Should be due shortly.

I have Sumi's HTR all season. I'll mount it on stock wheels for now and maybe get summer wheels for the ADVANs in the spring.

i lucked out today. Saw a few cars with snow on them on the way to work today, but nothing on the roads. I've been trying to hold off until mid november before I make my final decision.

I cant seem to find an inexpensive wheel set that i like out there...so I'm probably going with conti extremes or a dedicated winter tire on stock rims.

With the way the weathers been around here lately...I better make a decision quick!!

Another New England experience. No accumulation, but after parking I checked the tires -- stone cold, and I mean cold ! The oil temp was notably lower than normal, too. Cold handling on the Yokos was abysmal.

I wonder how the dealers are breaking the news to potential buyers: "By the way, you can't drive it out of here on these tires".

I didn't exactly go for an inexpensive option. I ordered Nokian WR's in 225/45VR17 on 17x7.5 rims -- but they won't be in for a couple of weeks.

The WRs are the Finland version of "all season" tires (for all Nordic seasons) -- the less extreme version of the Hakkapelitas. I picked the Nokians because the 225 width is still rated 94V, compared to 91 load rating on most 225s. With the larger tread blocks, they should be about the same diameter. The slightly narrower tire should cut through snow better, and warm up better on dry (wet, cold) pavement.

They should be a good choice for Boston metro west, where the roads are plowed most of the time (wet sand remains, though). Pity tirerack doesn't carry Nokians, as anything bought locally isn't exactly cheap.

Oh, and you left coasters who think you don't get snow: what do you call the news out of Sacramento?

My dealer was telling that to everyone including me. In fact he talked a younger girl out of the car by telling her that while I was sitting there....she bought an Eclipse convertible.

I was thinking about the Conti's as well. Someone turned me on to the Falken 512's. Consumer Reports rated these the best ultra high perf all season. They are cheaper than the Conti's. Check out www.1010tires.com.

I'm sure after we all put on our winter or all-season tires the weather will turn warm and sunny...

Well sure, eventually. "Global warming", they tell me.

Tires are a "consumable". Complaining about having to change the tires is like complaining about having to change the oil. (But how many new car buyers, these days, don't do that, either?)
