<grin> I didn't want to break the forum rules, as the bulk of my driving is on the street. As it happened, kyooch's PMs were so complete that I really didn't need to describe my concerns. In essence, I wanted to know whether diff-induced oversteer correlated positively with throttle input. That's all I can say before entering the no-no zone.

The way it should be is AYC - it is a shame the MMC decided that US is all of staright roads only and put that simple rear diff on USDM Evo's. However, simple rear diff is really good for drag racing or snow/gravel.

What is the price range if I am allowed to ask? You can pm if it's against the forum rules.

Check the vendor websites, that info is posted.

TRE's service is $450, Shep's is $350.

an upgraded mechanical rear diff will do everything you need it to do on the tarmac. 95% of what the ayc can do while being lighter and more reliable - i would thinkg ayc is better on the dirt/gravel/snow.. can make all the calculations/adjustments that a mechanical doesnt

It's not a weak link. There's not a lot of weak links in these cars. If I had to pick one, I'd say it's the clutch - but only if you're doing 6k rpm drops and that's mostly to protect the more expensive trans from popping.

I'm sure it's beefed up to some point. I'll see if I can ask him specifically though - and all I've got one on order!!

Update - heard from Shep:

There are a number of 'weak links' on the '03 Evos. Having no front LSD is one, an ill adjusted rear diff is another, and the pogo-stick suspension would be a third. However, I think we can safely say that by 'weak link' we mean that it is only a detriment to overall performance, not something that is going to fail.

I'm also interested in getting as much info on this as possible. My car's currently having a Quaife front, JRZ doubles, and HDSS put in. This would round out the package nicely. The projected turnaround on the TRE unit is one of the only reasons it's not already at TRE.

Yeah, with that list going in - I'd do the rear diff for sure. Hell, you might wanna look into a hybrid trans setup too. Get everything reinforced and pick the best of the VIII/IX gears if you want!

And yeah, TRE is on vacation currently, or something.

Which is why I'm glad Shep does rear diffs now. Even though it's not my daily and it can sit for a month or more in my garage, I want a shop that acknowledge's its customer's existence. He'll probably be getting mine this winter.

contact Devin at Speedelement down in Fremont. They dont list the TRE diff but sometimes carry it in stock and post on the local evo forums about it. Thats how I got mine.
