conti dws review!

just installed them replacing dunlop winter sport 3d's on my 09 impreza 2.5 winter car. impressions? pissed! seriously, during normal driving they are fine. taking any turn past .4g's and the car rolls over 12" to the outside. my wintersports went around a corner better, rode the same and were 99% as quiet. i just screwed up. the only thing that these have an advantage with could be wear but my wintersports had 15k on them and hardly any wear with mostly summer driving.

cliff notes: i just gave up a pile of snow traction and handling for nothing!

To it's defense, a fresh out of the box full tread depth tire will handle like that compared to a tire that's worn. Give them some time and the handling will tighten up.

i saw that in a few posts and am holding out hope that its true. ill update after more miles but i have never had a tire handle so ill out of the box. also added 5psi to bring them to 40. im hanging onto the 3d's for now just in case. they drive and handle like an all season performance tire and have great winter traction, i highly recommend them!

A soft sidewall probably? I know from experience of mounting all different tires that continentals and michelins are my fav cause the sidwalls flex enough while mounting to make it easier to mount. I have tried a few of the contis, michelins ps2s, and pirelli p zeros. I wasnt impressed with them when cosidering price per performance value imo.

in a past life i was a shop manager at a custom wheel and tire store for 7 years and i agree about conti/general and michelin although uniroyal was the worst! although michelins have a soft sidewall they generally have decent response and handling so there is more to it than sidewall feel alone. i have always hated conti/general with a passion and deceided to try these and not be a stubborn bastard.

i have 200 miles on them and they are a little better, but still not acceptable to me. ill give them until 1,000 miles before i give my final judgement. until then i think people should buy wintersport 3d's instead. dont be scared by the fact that they are in the snow category, they are a great all season.

The DWS are a great tire. Not for snow though, even though they say it will do snow.

i dont mind em, you certainly feel the flex, but i didnt get em to replace my summers..

guess i just consider all season and performance to be mutually exclusive.

update: after a couple hundred more miles they are better. still not what i hoped handling wise, but acceptable as long as they do decent in the snow.

No all-season is great for snow. An all-season is by definition a compromise in all areas - if you live in snowy regions, you should be purchasing snow tires, not all-seasons.

just got done with my first drive in snow with them. not bad, not as good as snows obviously but they are about what you expect and will get you wherever you need to go with awd. handling is also better with more miles. a ton better than the first 100 miles. not an exceptional tire by any means, but overall a good all season if you arent an aggressive driver.

just got these put on yesterday, and I got what I expected from a/s tires...luckily, it snowed quite a bit and was really impressed at the grippage especially on the expressway with no salt down...still was able to push 60mph (while everyone was granny driving at 30mph) and no sliding during lane changing, or even quick braking (bc ppl can't drive in snow)...really like em so far

We just got 18" of snow today. I had the evo out this morning with my new DWS. I think it is fair to say, the limit of them is the ground clearance of the car, not the tire themselves. I was pushing though the snow plenty fine. For the money I am happy with them
