Picking the right tires?
Picking the right tires?
So spring is coming and the first time i have my evo in warmer conditions. I need help based on other owners experience on what high performance tires to choose.
-My evo will not be a daily driver or will it be a full track car. its my fun car probably drive it 2 times a week (my day off, to the beach, spirited driving, cruises etc). I will probably use it for autocross for maybe 3-4 times this spring/summer total
-Looking for great dry grip and pretty good wet grip cuz i doubt ill be autocrossing in the wet.
-Pretty reasonable tire wear. I know rule of thumb usually is greater tire = less duration so 15-20k mile life is ballpark what im looking for since the car will probably only see 5-7k miles a year
-The tires are going on the stock 17" bbs mr wheels (i think theyre 17x8's or 9's) Is 235/45/17 good or should i change the sidewall/width dimensions for better handling characteristics
The car is mostly stock (stock suspension, brakes (will be upgraded before ax), performance aside from fuel pump, intake, and catback. Cost im kind of looking for <$200/per tire since i can mount and balance them myself. I used to have falken 452's on my last vw and they were wonderful but i know they are better tires out there. i was kind of thinking of the nitto n555's or the toyo t111r's help is appreciated thanks

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
I recommend doing some searching and reading here. Well covered topic.
...with that, Dunlop Z1 Star Specs / RE11s / NT05s / XS...extreme summer tires.
Stock BBS are 17x8. For what little AX you have planned. 235/45R17s are what I would run.

Thanks smike.... Now if I do anymore autocross what profile tire should I use that's better for autos but still good for street driving?
I have searched and it's hard to pinpoint because everyone has their own different preferences and they're more weekend warrior-esqe than me

Decent chunk of things to choose from in that range. If you see more track time than street the B-Stone RE11's would be a great choice, heavier street than track you could go with the Dunlop Z1's (prob the most popular tire on the boards), or the BFG KDW2 for the longer wear side of things if you can put up with them being noisy.
yoko advan Neova AD08
I went from the stock advan A046s to the hankooks RS2s 245/45/17 it was noticeable different. Tires were less sticky = took more effort to come to a stop and felt I was riding a balloon with a weaker sidewall. Only good thing was ride comfort was better.
Glad I wore those tires out so now I'm back on the stock size 235/45/17 and man the Neova AD08 feel like the OEM tires just like the day I drove her off the dealer lot. Solid sidewall and you can feel the tires sticking to the pavement and kicking up the rocks into the wheel well.
I would stick to the 235 size and star specs do have the right size would be the next best thing from what I read. NT05s and Hankook RS3s don't come in the proper size for our 17x8" stock rim. I didn't want to take a chance and buy another set of tires that would leave me disappointed so I went back to a brand that gave me happiness.
Downside is the price of yoko tires eeek
