Kumhos anyone?
Well, I got about 15k out of the stock Advans, and new tires are coming soon. I like the Advans but I dont want to drop $800 on new tires.
I live in AZ. We rarely see rain here, and no snow, so these will be my everyday tires. I don't track my car, but I like to have fun with it sometimes.
What are your guys' takes on the cheapo Kumho Supra 712s?
Should I spend a little more money and pop for something else?

I found some Dunlop SP sport FM901s for $320.00 installed (225/45/17) they have a wear rating of 200 (advans are 160 I think). On my favorite mountain road they feel the same as the stockers (maybe alittle less ultimate grip but more progresive at the edge so you can get closer to the edge with more confidance). I think that the autoX they might be a few 10th's slower but hey thats what track wheels are for! These seem like a cheap alternative to the advans with the same feel when driving the car fast and it wont kill you to replace 'em every 20-25K miles.
The 712's aren't a bad tire for the price. Overall performance is above average and quite good for the price. If you want a better tire and dont mind spending a little more, take a look at the Yokohama ES100 . Great bang for the buck! Better in the wet, dry, and overall wear. I would really think about the Yokos.

How ironic is it that my other choice for tires was in fact the Yokohama ES100.
Personally, I do like those tires better, and they're not too much more. I was just curious how the Kumhos compared to other tires in the "less expensive tire" catagory (less than $150 per tire).
Looks like some new Yoks are in order for my EVO. Do you give any special deals for buying with you, Neal? I will be needing these very soon.
Thanks

Unfortunately, we cannot offer special forum pricing Even if I sell a large quantity to an individual over the phone no discounts apply. We always try to put our best price out there initially so there is no haggling. Many times we come out better, sometimes we don't. It all depends on the product. Sorry

No problemo. Even without any discounts, the online Tirerack cost including delivery to my door is $50 less than Discount Tire Direct (even with their free shipping).

I ordered a set of 711's (yes, 7-11) a few weeks back and just had them installed Saturday. I went extra-cheap because I've already burned through the Advans and a set of Kumho MX's in 18,000 miles. Both sets were used for commuting 50 miles a day and AutoX'ing.
The 711's will be only commuter tires, no racing. Since the car rarely sees 70mph, let alone 130+, I decided that I didn't need the V rating and more agressive looks, handling, etc. of the 712's. The 711 is still considered high-perf summer, perfect for driving here in Texas, just like it would be for AZ too.
The first thing I noticed is how much quieter the tires are. Then again my MX's were 1/2 bald in the front (outside of tires, due to insufficient camber during AutoX) and down to the wear bars in the rear.
Some quick steering inputs felt a bit squishier from the tires, but some of that is also probably 10.5/32 tread compared to like 1/32 tread left on the MX. There is going to be more block dquirm with all that extra depth.
So if you're really looking for economy, like me, you could probably also swing the 711's. I had the 712's on Subaru and those were nice tires too. A few more bucks than the 711, but a little more performance oriented, too.

The 711 isn't a bad tire either. However, it is under speed rated for the EVO. The manufacture recommends, and in some cases requires, that we sell nothing less than a V rated for this car. The 711's are H rated, a step below the minimum recommendation. It really would be best to stay with a V rated or higher.
I have 712s on my car.
I also have Tien High Techs and an agressive alignment.
I like the 712s. I have had them on my previous cars and for the money you can't beat them.
I have done two mountain runs with the 712s and only noticed a drop in traction on the 180 degree turns, but it was not problem.
Overall I really like them. They wear well, grip well, and for the price, you can't beat them.
The only thing is that, my next set will be 245s instead of 235s.
PM me if you have any questions.
