minimum # of threads in stud for correct clamping

I'm pretty sure Neal would have access to this information but not sure if he is allowed to disclose such parameters or not. Maybe other know that as well.

I would like to know what the minimum number of threads (or stud length) that needs to be exposed for correct clamping for the wheel nut.

Say that I get a wheel that required a 5mm spacer. I want to know the minium allowable stud length required for the nut to properly clamp and hold the wheel in place.

I don't think it is proper to say "you will be ok with a 3mm or a 5mm spacer" because each wheel has different thickness. Therefore your wheel thickness + the spacer thickness subtracted from the stud length will be left over for the nut. I want to know what that minimum length must be.

Thanks in advance.

as a general rule of thumb you want the threads to protrude beyound the nut about three threads.. with special lug nuts I think you should figure the diameter of the stud plus fifty percent as the needed length. ie a 14mm stud would be about 3/4 of an inch. untill some one with a better knowledge posts that should work

rule of thumb is the width of the stud should be the least amount of thread into the lug. I would add a 2 or 3 more threads. Remember that a wheel that doesn't ride on its center hub is considered very unsafe. The stress put on the studs with spacers is very high and in roadracing can cause total snapping of the studs. Roadracers usually use spacers, but they also inspect their cars often.

Another way to look at it is the number of turns of the lug nut you get. I 've looked into this in the past and it seemed like the concensus was that you needed around 8 or 9 full turns of the lug nut for it to be safe. That being said, I know people who have auto-x'd with only 4 or 5 turns but I sure wouldn't recommend it.

Are you talking about SSR Comp's

Buy a wheel that fits. The SSR Competitions require a 5 mm spacer, don't waist your money on wheels that do not fit. Get the SSR Type C's from Japan. They have a 30 mm offset and do not rub with the stock tires (17 x 8.5). I have them on my car which is lowered on coilovers.

I can't afford SSR and don't fancy the look. I want an under $250 wheel. I want a cheap 18x8.5" wheel with a specific look. The problem is that almost all sub-$250 wheels for the evo I don't like the looks of. I Don't care about the weight as 2-5 pounds here or there means nothing for street driving and you will never notice it or be affected by it.

I want a wheel such as the ADR M-Sport ($240 each)

or the ASA AR1:

Would love to have the BBS RX II's

or the OZ Superlega III's,

but that is way beyond my budget.

Any vendors willing to help me out? Need a wheel looking like any of the above in 18x8.5 for under $250 a piece. Don't care about weight or brand.
