On my front right rotor, it has hot spots on it. Left side doesn't have any. Trying to figure out why. Any ideas? Check rotor thickness and meets minimum requirement. Brand new CL RC5 pads, stock rotor that has been resurfaced. Notice when stepping on my brakes, during a long brake stop the same side has more noise coming from it. Wheel bearing maybe? Any help or previous experience would be appreciated. thanks

 

Check pistons on that caliper. Make sure pads are not kinked at all and slide on the glide pins freely.

 

Just as Smike said, if the pistons are sticking or if the pads are binding up on something they will constantly be contacting the rotor and causing excessive heat.

 

how do you check if the calipers pistons are ok? do they usually go bad? got some miles on my car, around 80k

 

Take pads out. Check dust boots for heavy cracking and deterioration. Look at pistons for smoothness. Any scoring, roughness on surface, or leaks means they need to be replaced. They move in and out in the elements. Not really going bad; just exposed.

I had hot spots (I think) on my old rotors. Bluish color on the front rotor in several areas, both sides. Replaced them with new centric blanks. I jacked up the front and free spin the wheels. Spins freely with a slight drag. Had someone step on the brakes. Stopped no problem. Then when he let go of the brake pedal there is a slight drag again but spins. Checked thickness with a mic on both front rotors before install. Within specs. Checked caliper seals and for piston drag. Both seem fine. No leakage. No cracks and pistons slide back and forth fine.
Just that slight drag when free spinning. Is that normal?

 

Yes, pads do not completely back all the way out. There might be some light dragging sounds. But if the wheel is hard to spin freely...then you have to much drag and there are other issues.

 

Are you sure its not uneven pad transfer? I know I have some spots on my rotors from my last track day where the pads were leaving heavy areas of transfer (also could create a pulsing under heaving braking). These could look like hot spots if you didn't know what you were looking at... Not saying you don't, but maybe you could post a pic so we could see it?
