Brakes and Gears
phenix: yea, they don't "warp" as in change shape due to heating, but the deposits alter the thermal properties of the metal, and when heated up, expansion will vary due to different amounts of brake deposits on the rotor(at least that's what i'm getting off his write up). its very true, but i will have to say that, with as much respect as i can give to him, that i believe rotors do warp. i guess one example of this is if you have someone who brakes lightly all the time, typically the pads/rotors won't heat up to the level that deposits may be left on the rotor(this is an example...not to say this is what the norm is). if from that, the rotors will in no way ever recieve the "vibrating/pulsation". however...even with situations such as that, if the brake components heat up just slightly(typicall 300+degreesF), and if someone doesn't know but likes to hold their brake pedal down hard, it will cause the rotor to warp. this i've seen many times. the pedal pressure you apply, transfered to the piston/calipers, do exert enough force that the rotor, when heated, will be deformed or warped. but then again...this is a guy standing on his brake at a stop light.... i do agree that, typically, the vibration and feel that most people experience when diagnosed as "warp" is what CarrolSmith describes as the pad material being deposited on the rotor.
about more abrasive materials removing those deposits...yea its true. but like you said...rotor life is sacraficed. but hey...ideally we want that...because more friction = more stopping power ASSUMING that one has done the other setups neccessary(suspension, tires, alignment)...and actually knows how to brake. i wouldn't say that using more abrasive pads would "resolve" anything, since at any rate the pad will still transfer material to the rotor if heated enough and placed on a static rotor.
all in all...just more information to be digested...i do like what he said tho...its very helpful to me for future reference.
....and now that i see this has gone way off topic...i think i'll stop here = \

carpe135: do the break-in procedure as instructed on the site that phenix linked to. that's the correct break-in procedure for our brakes... when the brakes are "treated" correctly...warping should not be an issue
Yup to all, the car I've got is a JDM import Evo 8. Hence, the 6 gears. Figured the probelm on the 6th gear popping out. It was a pin that had come loose in the internal transmission box.
Basically, what you've got to do is remove the transmission selector from the engine bay and look for a tiny pin that may be sticking out of place. knock the pin back into its socket and you're good to go. Now, how the pin got out in the first place, who knows. That's why it may have been a manufacturers defect...Will keep you guys posted if it should happen again.
As for the brakes, I got my rotors replaced and so far no issues. In response to having to change your pads if you change your rotors, it really depends on the condition of the pads at the time. Get a professional to verify it

I remember there was a recall on the JDM 6-speed Evo 8 regarding the shifter, that might be the problem you're having.
