DANGEROUS D2 Coilover defect!!!
DANGEROUS D2 Coilover defect!!!
I did some research on these coilovers before I bought them. Heard a lot of good things even from STM. So I bought these d2 coilovers about 2 weeks ago. They were put on last saturday with no issues no broken bolts only took about 2 hours. They were put on by a friend of my family who owns his own shop. I noticed a vibration coming from the passenger front afterwards. I went ahead and bought an axel to fix the problem. I got the old axel out and the new one in and went to put the bolts back in the bottom of the strut. Next thing I know boom the strut rod breaks. The spring hits me in the head after ricocheting off the inner fender and damaging my fender a bit. Now I have a $1100 suspension that is broken on one corner and im afraid to drive on the other 3 if I was to replace it. Luckily my head is ok and I wasn't driving the car it could have been much worse. This is my daily driver so I also now do not have a car to drive to work. I don't exactly know how to go about getting a refund or getting this taken care of. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your lucky to be around to tell the story. When those springs cut loose they take everything out. GL with getting something else-- I would walk from any replacement parts and go with someone else asap.
I contacted d2 they said these just dont break like this. They asked me if I had lubricated the pillow ball mount. I said yes and that I used the lube that was provided with the coilovers. So does that mean that if you dont lubricate them that these will break? That doesn't seem right to me. Im sending them some pics and was told they will open an investigation. Not really expecting to get to far with them honestly. Since I paid with paypal im escalating it to a claim.

Replace the bad corner and buy something else and sell those. You will NEVER have confidence in those coilovers and if you never have a problem you will be in fear that "today may be the day"
Take them off and go back to stock and get something else asap.

Wow man glad your ok. Outside of an accident I have never seen a strut rod shear off like that.
Good luck on getting a replacement and I agree with Smurf. I'd get the replacement and sell them. Like he said I'd be driving around with the thought of that happening in the back of my mind everyday

What im hoping happens is paypal refunds the money and I send the back the coilovers to the seller to deal with. These were obviously defective and it should be up to the seller to handle with d2. One thing is for certain I will never buy anything from d2 again. I would encourage anyone considering these coilovers to go with another brand as well.
news flash: all chinese coilovers are the same
this is why, if you buy cheap, i'd recommend fortune auto because at least they have a USA presence and can handle customer service claims. i'm not saying the quality will be any better, but the addition of a US presence and actual customer service department is nice

That is crazy, I'd glad it didnt break while you were driving and cause you to wreck your car and hurt yourself or someone else.
FWIW after researching spherical bearing for a couple of weeks I found out that most of the time when used in an automotive application such as in your top hat they are sealed and dont require lubrication. A lot of them are teflon lined, thus dont require lubrication.
With that being said, I am quite confused and my only conclusion is that they were defected from the manufacture or were somehow weakened during installation. Given that you were installing coilovers aka a complete setup and didnt have to touch that top nut I dont see the likelihood that they were damaged during installation. Good luck!

I can honestly say that we have put D2's through some crazy abuse and never experienced any kind of issues. Thats kinda crazy but I guess it could happen to anything. Defects are defects. With that said, if they were purchased from us we will gladly take care of the issue for you.
