Brake ducts & improved cooling...

I'm interested in finding out what people are doing for brake ducts and improved brake cooling. I've seen the guides and heard of a couple people who have removed their dust guards; do those changes really help?

I've generally heard that the best solution is to use as large a duct as possible and cool the rotor first, then the caliper if you have the air.

Has anyone here fabbed up some ducting yet?

I haven't gotten around to ducting yet, but did improve cooling a bit. In addition to adding the brake air guides I improved airflow to them, which in turn should help cooling some.

Here's a pic of the undercover. The modifications were done to both sides, but only one side of photos is being shown enough to get the idea. I cut the piece of flap on the undercover that the instructions that came with the air guides showed.

I also cut the lip on the chin spoiler that blocked smooth air flow to the air direction guides on the under cover.

Brake air guides no longer being blocked of air flow. The instructions that came with the guides instructed to remove this piece to improve flow to them.

Thanks Noodle - good info. Are you running with your backing plates on or off?

The backing plates are very easy to remove - just two bolts if I remember correctly. The ABS sensor wire is also attached to the plate, so you have to take that off as well - easy.

When I first got my car, I took the backing plates off and enlarged the holes at the base to allow more air to get at the center of the rotor. I was going to take the plates off completely, but I got concerned about the ABS sensor getting too much heat from the rotors. One of these days, I am going to take the plates off and put some heat insulation on the sensor and wiring.

I've posted before about my brakes working OK on road tracks using the stock pads. Others have had contrary experiences! I think the reasons mine work OK is that I installed the air guides and cut out the backing plates before I ever used the car on the track.

is this from the backside, i was looking at them quickly and it seems to be attached from the front. like you would have to remove the rotor and brakes.

will have to take a better look

Was under the car doing some other work and looked over at the shield. Not sure if removing them would offer anything significant. The bulk of the caliper and hub is open in the clear to receive the air from the cooling guides.
