tread/tire shaving

Ok so i'm thinking about shaving the tires I got. The tires I got are the Falken Azenis tires in 205/50/15 size. Hear me out first, the reason I posted in the Evo forums is because there seems to be more input floating around int he Evo forums rather than the Lancer forums. Not trying to start anything, I just think I'd get more exposure here.

Anyways, can anyone convince me to get these tires shaved? i want more performance, but i also want to keep these tires for a while. but then again, i will only put these tires on once i get to the place of the event so i probably won't put too much mileage on the tires..then again I might put these on for a weekend spin through Sheridan Ave. Anyone have any input on tire shaving? Id like it if it were specific to this tire. Thanks!!

Try checking the STS/STX forum over at http://sccaforums.com. I seem to recall some discussion on this topic over there recently...

Tire shaving is done because tires perform best in the middle portion of tire tread. Manufacturers put extra tread on for extra tread life. Shaving puts the tire in it's performance max. However, it will most likely reduce the tires usable life - UNLESS used only in a race environment. This finding is usually reserved for treadwear ratings of 50 for most competition tires.

Concerning Azeni's - leave them be. They're street tires - they aren't "real" competition tires. An example of a "real" competition tire that's DOT legal would be a Kumho Victoracer, or Hoosier DOT slicks.

The treadwear rating is 200 on an Azeni. Heat cycle them manually (on the car), and you'll get good service. If you're really picky, have the tire company heat cycle them for you. Shaving this tire is probably not worth the extra miniscule performance edge you'll get out of that action.
