In praise of magic pads

This is all from memory, I don’t keep written records of what I’ve done to my car. The rear OEM brakes went first, say around 40K. The fronts made it to 45K. I replaced them with ceramic brakes from NAPA and the brake pedal became a suggestion box. It was like stopping a train. So, a month or two later I installed magic pads. I’m guessing those pads have been on the car for a decade. I looked at them when the car rolled 120K and there was about a quarter pad left on all corners with no unusual wear. The car is now at 124K miles. So, time (or past time) to service brakes. I ordered centric high carbon plain rotors and ….. another set of magic pads. The magic pads, left to go to the metal would probably be good for a 100K of the sort of driving I do. Rotors under magic pads don’t seem to wear. I’m replacing rotors because the fronts have already been turned and the rears have a pretty good lip that dates from when the OEM pads were on the car. I thought of going with something more aggressive but a decade of trouble free driving convinced me to stay with a proven product.

Right after I bought my Evo I started seeing a lady who lived 400 miles away. So, for a typical date figure 800 miles of interstate and 200 miles of local driving, lol. Still, I think 40 - 45 K miles was pretty typical for an owner who didn't track his or her car. So much depends on how you use the vehicle.

I have family living in the same area and years ago, coming back from a visit, back when I had my DSM, and on a day when the interstate was unusually empty, I made this trip in 4 hours and 30 minutes. It would have been quicker but I had to stop for gas! You don't see flyers like that on I-80 anymore - too many trucks and too much traffic.

Magic pads and girodisc made my EVO’s brakes not grab good in the rain.
There was always a slight delay till they grabbed right.
Made driving scarry, definitely not magic in my case!

Hmm, not something I ever noticed. However, 10 years is a long time, it may be the product has changed. I hope not.

How is the initial "bite" ? Did it squeal ? Also, is the brake dust minimal, equal to or exceeding oem pads?

Initial bite is maybe 20% less than OEM but can still instantly lock the brakes if that is what is needed. A little more bite would make the brakes more harmonized with the rest of the controls. The idea of harmonized controls comes from aviation. An aircraft with heavy elevators and light ailerons is hard to control. The operator should get the same response with the same amount of effort. They did seem to exhibit more bite in subfreezing temperatures.

I use plain mutipurpose grease as lubricant for brake pads and the only time I had a brake squeal was after years of driving and the grease was gone. The noise was not loud, you tend to ignore it for awhile. Pull the pads on the offending corner, add grease and fixed. I should add, these pads were always run with the OEM shims.

I've never tracked these pads and I don't suggest you try it.

Brake dust is close to none.

So, in summary, the ideal pad for DD but could use a little more bite. More bite would probably mean more rotor wear.
