Feeling of loose wheels

Hi guys, i got my evo 8 about 2 months now. And i notice that something at the front of the car is not completely correct. Everytime i drive slow and over an uneven road (cobblestones for example) i notice a slight shock in my steeringwheel and a cluncking noice from the front. It really sounds like the wheels are loose but they are not. With driving over the highway there is no problem just when i drive slow and over uneven surfaces.

someone knows what this could be?

Hi Mitch / Welcome aboard @Mitch_Evo8

Could be a number of issues.
  • Ensure the wheels are properly seated & torqued. If youre running aftermarket wheels make sure you have the proper hub centric rings installed
  • Do a simple wheel bearing check w/the wheels on & off the ground (12 & 6 o'clock rocking motion at the wheels)
  • Pull the wheels off & give the front end a visual. Cracked CV boots or obvious loose components
  • Ensure the front struts / sway bars, end links etc are properly torqued
  • With the front end off the ground & the key in the ON position, i would turn the wheels full left & right listening / feeling for any noises, clunking, etc in the rack/pinion
Just my quick thoughts / Cheers, Joe

I'd 2nd these suggestions^^^. If all checks out start looking at control arm bushings. Even bad/loose sway bar end links can produce a knocking sound...not so much feedback in the steering necessarily though.

Bad tie rods....both inner and outer...should also be inspected.

Also a blown front strut can make a knocking sound.

Come back and let us know what you find if you like. Always interesting!

You don't mention on if you are on stock suspension or coilovers but one thing I dealt with previously was the top nut on my coilovers working loose and causing a slight clunk over uneven road. I never had a feel in the steering wheel but I imagine if it was bad enough it might. A drop of locktite as solved my issue.
