Post LSD question

First of all, what is LSD? i know it is stand for Limited Slip Differtiation, but what is it really do? I know, from reading review, its help with handling, especially when turning. But, I don't know what it really does.
Second, what the different between rear LSD (in Evo8), center LSD (in Evo8 MR), and front LSD (cucco made one for Evo8)?
Lastly, what is superAYC? what is it do? and can added that to my Evo?
thank for any info

LSD is either a drug or Limited Slip Differential . A differential helps wheels turn at their own (different) speed during cornering maneuvers (when one wheel must cover more distance then the other)... but it does so by limiting the drive power applied to one of these wheels.

A LSD limits this "slippage" of the differential, thus distributing the available power between the drive wheels more evenly... (sometimes at the cost of a bit more rubber!)

Some LSD work on the back wheels, some on the front (since on 4 wheel drive cars, you need a diff. for both axle) and some work by distributing power as required between the front and back of the car.

To top it all up, some rally cars will receive electronically controlled diffs. Those might be compared with ABS, as they are controlled by a central processor that actively monitors and then very skilfully applies the available power where it is most needed...

In escence, LSD might make your car accelerate faster while turning out of a corner... or bite better when off-roading. and while the latter might not be of much help to you, the first might be of some interest to most...

EDIT : AYC (and it's super brother) is a LSD system for the central differential (the one between the front and back axle). The super type should allow to "move" more power to the front or rear axles if the need should arise. Frankly, if you ever need this very specialised kind of system... you then either frenquently drive on snowy roads (as I do) or might want to consider a career as a rally driver (good luck then).

Did that fully answer your multiple interrogations?

I know I had a blast in coming up with the answer!

Moderators : If this thread can be of any interest at all to anyone else, it might be a good thing to move it to a more suitable forum, wouldn't it?

To all the EvoM members : Catch anything flawed in my LSD explanation? Please, by all means say so!

My pleasure!

This system will probably never be available here since Mitsu (sadly) diluted the Evo in order for it to be affordable (and profitable) in the US market. Remember that the original (JDM) Evo is a very rare car... and the domestic version is a mass produced vehicule.

Clarification to Workz' post - AYC is an active REAR differential, ACD is the active centre diff.

The difference between AYC and Super AYC is that the latter is based on a helical diff rather than a clutch pack mechanical unit, allowing much higher lateral torque transfer ratios.

Damn... I almost had it figured out!

Sorry, my mistake...

If this was like Golf though, I'd get a handicap for not writing in my own language...

Something tells me I might get into much more trouble if I was able to describe the effects of LSD in much details...
