Running a wider wheel in front

I've been perusing alot of the Jap mags and have seen that they tend to go with a wider wheel in the front like a 17x9.5 with a 28 offset and go with a standard 17x8.5 in the rear. It seems very popular with the older V's and VI's. Has anyone tried this with an VIII?

Here is an example on a WRX.

I would imagine that would create an extremely tail happy Evo. I'd hate to be trail braking into a corner with that extreme tendancy to oversteer. Do you really need that much oversteer? Maybe it would be better suited to D1 or tarmac rallying.

All of the cars that run the wider wheels in front are all designed to beat the Tsukuba lap time. Not for drifting. I just think it looks cool.

I have run a wider wheel/tire combination in the front for autocross. One combination I have is a 18x10 front wheel with 285/30-18 tire and 17x9 rear wheel with 245/40-17 tire. The setup is not as radical as it may seem - the really wide tire is not utilized on the rear effectively since it's only carrying 40% of the weight.

Pram I've run wider wheels and tires in front before (on my civic though). It will make the car rotate better through turns but not crazy oversteer like other have said, defintely not. the down side is you can't rotate the wheels when the front starts to wear out. I will go for it if I'm not on a limited budget.

Cool. Thanks for the info Kev. At the rate my tires are getting eaten up, not being able to rotate would suck.

'90-'96 300zxtts were equipped with wider rear wheels and tires, I know several people who auto-crossed with the rears mounted up front.
